Visual Merchandiser (Former Employee) –  Costa Mesa, CAJune 25, 2019
Great place to have a part time job...
Super flexible with scheduling.

But when it comes to being a full time associate the job can be super demanding and expeditions can be very high.

A draining workplace
Sales Associate (Former Employee) –  King of Prussia, PAJune 25, 2019
My working experience at Zara was completely horrible and I would not recommend working here to anybody. The management was terrible. They did not care about you and took advantage of you. The company itself needs to do a better job of the pay rate because working here, I was mentally and physically exhausted and I should not feel like that especially the pay that I was getting per hour. One of the managers who was a transfer from the Philadelphia location was completely rude and disrespectful. Overall, working at Zara it was terrible, absolutely terrible.

Expectations are too high for the amount of pay, training is nonexistent, and management is clueless.
Sales Associate (Former Employee) –  Denver, COJune 17, 2019
The "training" to move up is insane. I was fully doing a Visual Merchandiser's job for Sales Associate pay for over 6 months with false promises of a promotion and horrible training. They are ripping valuable employees off with insulting pay. HR would not listen. Recently, they even sent us out a counselor for employees to talk to, to make it "feel like we've been heard" (actual words from my manager). What is the point in talking to a counselor about the problems of the workplace if they have no power to change anything? In my area, even a terrible studio apartment costs $1K a month so $12/hr is not enough to get by and tons of easier jobs pay more.

I barely had any time to do my visual tasks because I was too busy doing Sales Associates' jobs because we were constantly understaffed, which resulted in blame for me not doing my "job" (which was not even officially my job since I was still in training). Lots of pressure from Regional Managers and I was expected to stay in constant communication with them. Very little new hires would stay due to the negative atmosphere and high expectations. Fingers were pointed and blame was constantly placed on the nonexistent "Visual team" (which consisted of one actual Visual and 3 trainees). Everybody there is miserable and lots of toxic drama takes place. I would only recommend working here part-time so you are insulated from all the nonsense that goes on. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because some of the people you will meet are great and I do believe Zara has potential. They have good technology and decent clothes, but it still
more... isn't enough to outweigh the terrible management and lack of care for employees. I guess that might just be the nature of fast fashion.  less

No growth for visuals
Visual Merchandiser (Former Employee) –  Manhattan, NYJune 16, 2019
A typical day as a visual is restocking the whole floor. Management doesn't do anything, just tell you things are empty. You basically get paid the same as the floor associates. You don't get the same respect as managers yet are considered to be part of management.

There's constant stress and pressure and people who work there for years never move up because there is nothing to move up to. You'll be a visual forever.

There's favoritism, management is petty and rude. They complain about people's attitudes yet treat no one with respect.

I can go on.

The only thing that makes this job bearable is the people you meet.

It can be very stressful to work in the store because it is often understaffed. You will always do more than your job description but you learn a lot.

Kinda good to work with so far
Sales Associate (Current Employee) –  Ala Moana Park, HIJune 15, 2019
I just started working here recently and immediantly i saw some hypocrisy with the "uniforms" i feel that its unjust that the female managers get to wear short colorful dresses while be critical of others "not following the dresscode policy" this is a form of narcissism in the work place and it also contributes to toxic atmosphere later in the career, its also hard to tell whos the customer and whos the manager if they continue to dress that way at times too. its important to note that i have no problem wearing uniforms IF everyone wears one as well. Also the managers say that everyone is equal and everyone is their own boss but if thats true than why do the rest of us wear uniforms and they dont? or the fact we dont create our own schedule without being bullied to take a shift they know we cant take?

Despite that, the workers are nice and a few of them were very helpful and insightful about things in the company and even was friendly with me when i asked a lot if questions. Some were even open about how long they stayed there and offered tips to remember things, The pay is nice and the bonus is gonna be great as well. Also the clothing there is hella cute and nice to look at as well. So yeah, looks like i'l be staying here for awhile.

Good Pay Horrible work environment
Cashier/Customer Service (Former Employee) –  Los Angeles, CAJune 14, 2019
Upon hire you're automatically thrown out on the sales floor with no real training. The managers were very fake and if you weren't a favorite they will find any type of fault in you and the work you do. It was a very cutthroat environment and if you would try to defend yourself then you were seen as problematic. The only good thing about this job was the pay but even that wasn't enough to make me stay.

Men's Department Manager (Former Employee) –  Albany, NYJune 14, 2019
The company does a lot to provide its employees, particularly management, with great benefits. However, the corporate team is very difficult to work with and they do a very poor job of communicating and fostering a healthy work environment

Fun job, bad management
Cashier/Sales Associate (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAMay 21, 2019
I worked as a cashier and I loved this job. My coworkers were the sweetest for the most part. However, the drama that went on in this place was worse than High School drama. Management felt completely entitled and were the core of all the drama.

They would disappear from the floor & carelessly talk badly about employees in the stockroom (where employees that worked in the stockroom would ease drop and tell the whole team what they heard). Management at my location were completely unprofessional and the HR department was no help at all. So many complaints were made against a particular manager regarding race issues and harassment. So much for zero tolerance discrimination policy.

Also, as a cashier we needed a manager to override quite often. We would call a manager and we would either get attitude from them, they would have a customer waiting for 15mins+, or during rushes; that PARTICULAR manager would clean up the store on his way to the registers, not only having the customer wait for a long period but causing our line to get longer. Then he would complain that we need to move faster because our line is too long.

It’s not much of a discount, stores in the mall gave me a better discount for being a mall employee than ZARA did. The only time the discount is really useful is during the 2 annual sales, where you get a discount off the discounted item.

This place had an extreme toxic work environment. The job itself was great, straightforward, fast paced and fun for the most part. I honestly wish I could’ve stayed but I come to work to make money, not to be stuck

The worst retail experience EVER!!!!
Stock Associate (Former Employee) –  Washington, DC/ Houston, TxMay 17, 2019
If your skin is dark....apply elsewhere. Unless you are of Hispanic origin. Or Unless you're willing to submit to a ridiculous work regimen and toxic work environment that changes at leat once every 3 months. They'll hire you. Play nice for about a month. Depending on your location. But you WILL be uncomfortable, upset, confused and frustrated with management/corporate management daily. This retail company is based out of Spain. 95% of the US stores are managed by Hispanics (of all latin backgrounds) who lack professionalism, proper English, managerial experience, assertiveness, integrity and honesty. And dont forget communication. So many errors based on poor communication alone. It's horable! They consciously practice culture favoritism throughout these stores nationwide on customers and employees!!! I used to think it was my home store and Store Director. But when i relocated halfway across the country i noticed that this issue was simply the Zara culture. I'll pass.

Very stressful. Not paid for the amount of work they want done
Visual Merchandiser (Current Employee) –  Pentagon, DCMay 14, 2019
I could write a book about Zara but I’ll try to keep it short. I’ve been working for Zara in the DMV (Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia) area for over 2years. Management at stores are very poor and so is Corporate. Managers overall are rude with the exception of a few. No store can seem to keep employees (however HR never looks into it). And don’t bother reaching out to HR about any issues. NOTHING is kept confidential or solved. If you want to work in a high stress, underpaid, and toxic environment then ZARA is 100%. The job for you! Managers do NOT value there associates and team. And a team is what you need to run a successful store. You can give your 110% effort everyday and Nothing you do will ever be enough.... I can’t speak for other stores in different regions. But I would definitely avoid the DMV area.

I wasn't there that long
Stockroom Associate (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILMay 14, 2019
They are anally retentive about how the store is organized which isn't a bad thing but they freaked out about a wrong hanger on a woman's shirt. Things weren't organized and it was something I couldn't find but they saw that as a bad thing on me rather than the actual organization of the stockroom. Other than that they have a nice breakroom.
