The future of hiring is skills-first

There’s no shortage of talent. Just a shortage of recognizing it. Skills-first hiring means “if you can do the job, you should get the job,” regardless of how or where you built your skills. It makes it easier for employers to find quality, committed candidates.

Why skills-first hiring works

  1. Easier talent acquisition

Skills-first hiring doubles the chances of finding quality candidates.

  2. Reduces mis-hires

80% of hiring managers report more motivated candidates and fewer mis-hires.

  3. Diversifies the workforce

The majority of rural, Black, veteran, and Latine workers in the U.S. are STARs (Skilled Through Alternative Routes rather than a bachelor’s degree).

  4. Increases retention

STARs hired into roles with degree requirements removed have a 20% higher retention rate.

  5. Cost-effective

Properly matching skills to roles can save on the high costs of turnover.

Tear the Paper Ceiling

You might be screening out some of your best candidates. Traditional hiring practices
exclude many of the 70M+ STARs—job seekers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes, such as community college, military experience, or on-the-job experience, rather than a bachelor’s degree. The “Tear the Paper Ceiling” campaign, joined by Indeed in 2023, aims to remove these barriers. Indeed has already eliminated degree requirements for over 700 internal jobs and launched the BOOST technical apprenticeship program to transition employees into software development roles.
