Where are the best schools or school districts in Birmingham?

I really like Alabama Waldorf School. It's located in Crestwood/Forest Park. It's been around since 1987 and offers preschool (age 2.5) through Grade 8 education. It utilizes a worldwide curriculum called the Waldorf curriculum, and it's Alabama's only Waldorf School (there are about 180 in the U.S. and more than 1,000 worldwide).

It teaches all the academics you'd expect but enlivens them with art (painting, music, foreign language, drawing, handwork). It's got a great middle school curriculum that really meets the needs of developing adolescents, but its foundational programs for Nursery School - 4th Grade are also top-notch in how they understand what children in each program/grade need. It treats children as individuals and allows each student to unfold into who they are and not a cookie cutter version of what someone else thinks they ought to be. It turns out great writers and critical thinkers.

Its graduates go on to all the finest secondary schools in Birmingham including ASFA, JCIB, Altamont, Indian Springs, Shades Valley Theater Academy/Visual Arts Academy/Finance Academy, etc.

The school offers tours every Tuesday morning at 9am. Check them out at
