LoveMyCommunity said: Today I took the oral exam for a dispatcher position in San Francisco. I'm very anxious and was wondering if there is anyone involved in or who knows the hiring process. I answered the questions as best I could, using my common sense but being that I have no previous training I'm not sure if my answers where what the pannel was looking for. Do you know if a) they are looking for a "right" answer or more so looking to see how you respond? and b) how they score the test? is it like you need a 70% out of 100? All the questions where senario (what would you do?)type questions-nothing was aked about my skills or personality, etc so just wondering how much wieght does this have in the hiring process.

Thanks Guys!

They are looking for no right or wrong answers but how you handle situations under pressure. In other words answer what they want to hear, they looking for the right candiate I rememeber they ask me do I get along with my siblings I said yes, then they ask me if one of my sibling done something bad to me how would i handle that problem I told them I would talk one on one with my brother or sister and try to handle the situation in a civilized manner. Another question they ask how would I handle if my boyfriend cheated on me I told them I would move on with my life, they ask me have I ever been depressed about it I told them no because we decided it is best we go on our seperate lives. See I was careful of how I answered the question don't give them red flags about hiring you, good luck.

How long after the oral interview does it take to get hired??

My husband just finished the Oral exam on Friday. They told him they would let him know by this week. Was just wondering how much longer for everything else.

Weeks, months?

Same! Let's just be positive and give it our all :) question, is your typing test separate? my test for the 15th is a written and oral exam which I think takes 2 1/2 hrs then if I pass they'll send me an email to schedule Type test, etc, how is yours ?

The e-mail that I've rec'd said just an oral exam that will take 2 1/2 hours. It doesn't say n e thing about a written test. Im going to read it again, just to make sure!

the oral exam is them just asking you questions about tense situations and they want to see how you respond .sometimes they use heart rate monitors, sometimes not, depends on your location. my friend knows someone who works for the city and said the north Miami test on the 18th had 289 applicants asked to take the test. good luck

hi, i took my exam yesterday for Dekalb County in Georgia. However, i did pass my exam. the min wpm was 30 and i had 45 wpm. They look at all the test you take during the exam. After passing, the instructor took my background investigation booklet (she only took it from the ones who passed), so now they are running a background check. the next step after that is a polygraph then a profile is created, after that the Chief of Police will review and conduct an interview. Once the interview is done then you'll have your piss test and physical. Once that is done you will begin your 16 week training.

There is no study guide for the test. Took mine on 03/04/17 and it was a multi tasking test. Where there's a question on a different scenario, and on the bottom right corner there's this emergency situation on a different scenario on what to call either police, fire, ambulance, or utility. This is a common sense questions that we are familiar with when calling 911. For instance if there's a hurricane, and a electric pole fell off-who do you call? "Utility" right? Need to be careful on clicking because this takes a lot of points. You only have 15seconds to answer this pop out emergency question-while you're doing this you also listening to a person that is telling you his DOB, first name, and last etc. then you'll type this in on the boxes. They basically test your communication, multi-tasking, and how you can handle scenario without panicking. Good Luck! I'm glad I passed mine, but wasn't satisfied with my score. Hopefully I can retake, but waiting till they call me for orientation.

Did you get your TScore back yet? LAPD tends to take a little longer because of the size of the department. I recently received my TScore from West Covina it took 2 weeks..... I just received a conditional job offer from another agency as well. I know for California we have to go through POST other states have different standards of training. I did the written, panel interview, background and polygraph..... the contingency for me to get hired is passing the psych and medical this is the standard process. I applied in November 2016 and yesterday received my job offer bigger agencies take longer and background alone is a minimum of 6 months for the process. Hope this info helps ☺️

I took mine on Tuesday. I'm not sure if I passed yet but it was basically based on multitasking, with an emergency box at the bottom to choose either police ems medical or fire, you have 15 sec to alert whichever department. While you're doing that you also have to input information that it being said through your speakers.

Good Luck everyone

Thanks for all the helpful information. I had a couple of questions:

1. I'm in Cali as well. Did you take the post test before applying for the position?
2. Did the test cost anything?
3. I've seen dispatch positions open and prefer T score before applying.

This is a great forum, thanks to all

Do you take the written, panel interview, background and polygraph test all in the same day, or do you take the written test first, and then come back for the rest?? What is the process? I take my written on the 18th.

I got my date for the 18th, and the email I received said plan for 4 hours for a written test. Does that test also include, panel interview, background, polygraph and then drug test? Or is all of that done in one day?

To answer your questions
1.) I applied and was invited to take the test, that’s basically how it works with all agencies there’s still a prequalifcation process to make sure you meet the minimum standard.

2.) free test

3.) Some agencies use a test from POST those are the ones that give you your TScore some agencies have there own test they offer it all varies. If you already have a tscore I believe it’s good for a year you can submit that in lieu or taking another test at some agencies.

I’ve been a 911 dispatcher going on 5 months now good luck wish you much success.

Nope it says plan for hours for the written that’s probably exactly what it means. They won’t do it all in one day panel takes another hour, background takes a few months, poly is another hour or two, don’t forget the psych that’s an all day process and the drug medical screening is at the end and takes another hour, it’s for sure a process so be patient.
