Volunteering in a lab?

Is it possible to volunteer in a lab where medical technologists work? I'm a student currently planning on becoming a CLS in the future and I want to do this to gain exposure to the lab environment and meet people in the field. I was actually looking for part time work as a lab assistant but here in California it seems they want every lab assistant to be certified in phlebotomy.

I'm sure you could volunteer, but it might not be a bad idea to get the phlebotomy cert anyway. I think most CLS programs that include a lab rotation get you phlebotomy certification as well but I'm not positive about that.
