About Verifications for Licenses and Certifications on Indeed

Some jobs on Indeed may ask you to prove you have a professional license or certificate. This article explains how these checks work, how to share your proof, and what happens to your application.

For help with problems involving credential checks or technical errors, read our article Troubleshooting: License and Certification Check.

Important: This feature is currently available for some jobs in the United States, except in New York and California.

What is a credential check?

A credential check is one way for you to show that you have the professional license or certificate you say you have.

Note: This is not a background check or screening service.

Some jobs require a professional license or certificate. Examples include a registered nurse (RN) license or a certified public accountant (CPA) license.

When an employer lists a credential as a requirement for a job, they want to check:

  • The type of license or certificate you have
  • The state or organization that gave it to you
  • Your license or certificate number
  • The current status of your license (if it’s active)

How it works

When you apply for a job that needs a license or certificate, a License/Credential section may pop up while you are applying, asking if you have it.

  • If you answer Yes (that you have the required license or credential): you must show proof. You may either upload a file or choose a credential check through a separate company called Checkr (if available).
  • If you answer No: your application will show the employer that you do not currently have that license or certificate.

How to show proof of your credential

In both credential options below you will need to provide the following information:

  • Your first and last name (exactly as it looks on your license)
  • License number
  • The state or group that gave you the license
  • Your email address

Option 1: Upload a File

You can upload a clear photo or document from your device. Good examples include:

  • A photo or scan of your physical license
  • A screenshot or printout of your online certification page
  • An official letter from your state licensing board
  • An official paper showing you are a member of a professional group

Option 2: Credential Check by Checkr

Instead of uploading a file, you can ask Checkr to look up your license or certificate information directly with the official source (like a state board).

This service is totally optional and free of charge. If you pick this choice, you tell Checkr to look up your details, and you will need to give them:

  • Your first and last name (exactly as it looks on your license)
  • License number
  • The state or group that gave you the license
  • Your email address (you will need this to log into Checkr’s website if you need to correct something)

What happens next

If you request a credential check through Checkr, your application will pause for a few minutes while Checkr looks for your license or certificate. Sometimes this can take up to 3 days.

  • Results Found
    • The check matched your details with an active record at the source, which means your details met all criteria at the source as requested by you.
    • Your application goes to the employer right away.
  • Further Review Required
    • The check could not find a matching active record at the source.
    • This can happen for a few reasons, like a temporary system interruption, a typo in your information, or the current status listed by the source.
    • Please note: A match will also not be found if the official record has extra details on it beyond what you typed in, such as an official note in your files.
    • What happens to your application: in Further Review Required cases, the application is not shared with employers yet. You will need to upload a file of your license or certificate to finish applying.
  • Other Error
    • A technical problem prevented the credential check from running.
    • Your application is not shared with employers.
    • You will need to upload a file of your license or certificate to finish applying.

You will get a message once the check is complete. If you think there is a mistake with your results, you can ask for a correction. For step-by-step help, see Troubleshooting: License and Certification Checks.

Important: The Checkr option is only available for some jobs and locations. If your job or location doesn’t support it, you will just see the file upload option.

How to access your license or certificate information

    FAQs

Question: Do I have to use the third-party credential service?

Answer: No. Using the Checkr credential check option is totally up to you. You can always choose to upload a file instead.

Question: Does the third-party credential check cost money?

Answer: No. This service is completely free for job seekers on Indeed.

Question: Is my application submitted while the third-party credential check is being done?

Answer: No. While Checkr is looking up your license, your application remains pending. It will not be sent to the employer until the check finishes and finds a matching record. If you don't want to wait for the check to complete, you can choose to upload a file of your license to submit your application immediately.

Question: Can the employer see if a verification result shows “Further Review Required”?

Answer: No. Indeed does not tell the employer if a check returns "Further Review Required." Employers will only see credential check details in your application if the result is Results Found or if you upload your own file.

Question: Can my name on Indeed be different from my name on my license?

Answer: Yes. The check looks for an exact match, and using a name that is different from what is on your license might result in a Further Review Required. If your name on Indeed does not match exactly what’s on the license, you can add the exact name that appears on your license when applying.

Question: Can I correct a mistake or typo in my verification results?

Answer: Yes. You can ask Checkr for a correction through the My Jobs tab. For step-by-step help, Troubleshooting: License and Certification Check. To avoid waiting, you can also finish your application right away by uploading a file of your license while Checkr looks into the mistake.

Question: Why can’t I see my verification result in My Jobs when I picked the credential check option?

Answer: Sometimes there are technical errors when processing the credential check. In order to complete your application, you can upload an image of your license from My Jobs.
