Getting Started With Your Job Search

A complete walkthrough for setting up your profile, creating alerts, and landing your first interview.

  1. Step 1: Create your Indeed account

    Visit indeed.com and click Sign In in the top-right corner. You can create an account using your email address, or sign in with Google or Apple.

    If you already have an Indeed account, sign in and skip to Step 2.

    After creating your account, check your email for a verification link and click it to activate your account.

  2. Step 2: Build your profile

    Your profile helps employers learn about you. Navigate to your profile page and fill in:

    • Work experience — Add your most recent positions, including job titles, companies, and key responsibilities
    • Education — Include your highest level of education and any relevant certifications
    • Skills — Add skills relevant to the jobs you're looking for
    Tip: Profiles with a photo and complete work history get up to 2x more employer views.

  3. Step 3: Upload your resume

    A resume is essential for most job applications. Go to Profile > Resume and either:

    • Upload an existing resume file (PDF or Word)
    • Use Indeed's resume builder to create one from your profile

    Your resume will be automatically attached to applications unless you choose otherwise.

  4. Step 4: Set up job alerts

    Never miss a matching job by setting up alerts:

    • Search for the type of job you want
    • Click Get alerts on the search results page
    • Choose how often you want to be notified (daily or weekly)

    You can manage your alerts anytime from your Dashboard > Job Alerts page.

  5. Step 5: Start applying

    Browse job listings and click Apply now on jobs that interest you. Before submitting:

    • Review the job description carefully
    • Customize your resume if needed
    • Write a brief cover letter when the option is available
    You're all set! Keep your profile updated and check your alerts regularly for the best results.
