Tony Medaglia is no stranger to recruiting. A 28-year HR veteran, Tony runs the HR department for American Specialties, Inc., a leading manufacturer of building products based in Yonkers, New York.
Tony has recruited over the years by simply posting job ads as well as using external staffing and recruiting firms. While job ads work for some roles, he says “invariably you’ve got to sift through so many resumes. No matter how specific you are about what you’re looking for, you have to go through everything.”
“I’m old-school. I used to always shoot a note to thank an applicant for applying. But after a while I stopped doing it because there’s so many people who apply.”
When it came to bringing in outside help to find candidates who fit, Tony’s experiences have been mostly negative. “Outside recruiters are a little pushy with specific candidates they think should be hired. And fees of 17-22% of a candidates starting salary is completely ridiculous.”
