A pet insurance company needed to hire employees with specific licenses who could add to the company culture in new ways. Wanting to go beyond the employee referral program they’d been using for a while, the company’s chief of staff turned to Indeed to get in front of candidates with different perspectives and backgrounds.
Background: A pet insurance company bringing peace of mind to pet parents

Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Embrace Pet Insurance provides health insurance for dogs and cats. The company is focused on bringing peace of mind to pet parents so they don’t have to choose between their furry friend’s health and their budget.
What started out as a pet insurance concept ended up winning the Wharton Business Plan Competition in 2003. Since then, the business has grown into an industry pack leader. “I’ve seen [the company] grow in my 11 years here from 25 team members to almost 300,” says Chief of Staff Sara Radak.
Made up of a team of dedicated pet lovers, Embrace is also more than just a pet insurance provider. One of the company’s core values is giving back to the four-legged community, so Embrace has covered adoption fees at local shelters, sponsored local and national events, launched community fundraising competitions and put its vet techs to work as volunteer assistants at low-cost clinics.
Challenge: Getting in front of new candidates with the right qualifications
Embrace Pet Insurance’s employee referral program had been their main recruiting strategy for a while. But as Sara explains: “[Through referrals] we know we’re getting people that other people at the company are passionate about, but candidates aren’t always qualified through that method.”
Sara didn’t just want to boost the company’s recruiting efforts, she also wanted to reach a broader set of quality applicants. “We’re not just looking for people who fit our culture, we’re also looking for people who grow it,” she says. The team was interested in hiring people from all backgrounds to better meet the needs of their diverse customer base and ensure pets continued to receive the best possible care.

That’s when she turned to Indeed. Her goal? Diversify the candidate pool and get in front of new candidates with the skills and licenses required to keep the business growing.

Embrace also uses screener questions for roles that require licensure. For example, their claims adjusters need to be registered vet techs and pet insurance advisors need to be licensed P&C agents. “[Screener questions] allow us to make sure that the candidates actually have those licensures so that we’re not taking time interviewing candidates who don’t actually qualify,” Sara says. By making sure applicants have certain qualifications up front, you can improve your chances of finding the right people for the job. Jobs with screener questions on Indeed are

With the help of Indeed, Embrace Pet Insurance is growing at a rapid pace. “We’ve been working with Indeed for years,” says Sara. “It’s really given us the flexibility and the opportunity to get in front of new candidates with new tools that really fit our needs.”
The employees she’s hired through Indeed have also contributed new ideas and added to the company culture in ways that strengthen the team. “We want to be pushed to grow as a business and as individuals,” she says. Hiring with Indeed has been a major catalyst for the business growth and innovation Sara is hoping to achieve.
