6 Logistics Coordinator Interview Questions and Answers
Q:
What daily tasks do you perform as a logistics coordinator?
A:
It’s important for a logistics coordinator to have an organized list of what to do every day. They should be keeping track of upcoming deliveries as well as keeping track of shipped products. Logistics coordinators need to be able to communicate because they will need to speak with delivery companies and clients alike. What to look for in an answer:
- Organized response with detailed list of duties
- Ability to multitask
- Able to communicate with clients and colleagues
“The first thing I do every day is check my email to see if any clients had an issue with their delivery. I then make sure that we are prepared for the day’s deadlines.”
Q:
What action would you take if you are coordinating a delivery and part of the product was damaged?
A:
Pay attention to how detailed they are in their explanation. Look closely at how the applicant explains their actions; do they speak clearly? An individual who demonstrates a well thought out, detailed description is someone who can think ahead and be fast on their feet. It also means they have the skills to detect a problem, solve it, and lead others before a crisis hits. What to look for in an answer:
- A direct response without hesitation
- Detailed explanation on how to avoid an issue
- Specific examples of avoiding quality control issues
“I would use the company’s protocol for damaged products and make sure that the customer gets a quality product.”
Q:
While managing activities throughout an order fulfillment and transportation cycle, did you ever need to step in to solve an issue?
A:
A logistics coordinator must properly handle orders and be sure that nothing is missing in the order. If one thing is missing, the coordinator would need to know how to fix the situation. Look at how they handled the situation; did they handle it well or become flustered? You will be able to tell from their answer if your applicant can solve problems in their job placement. What to look for in an answer:
- Problem-solving skills that go above and beyond their line of work
- Procedural mindset even in a difficult situation
- Management ability
“I noticed there was a discrepancy in the transportation cycle. I was able to reroute the transportation to make the delivery work in the company’s favor, while also helping the client.”
Q:
Describe a situation when you dealt with a disagreement over a mis-shipment location.
A:
Asking this question can help the interviewer see how the candidate works with others. Look closely at what technique they used to confront the individual. Were they compassionate or aggressive to the other employee to get them to look at things their way? Asking this question will help the interviewer get a sense of their applicant’s attitude towards work and their co-workers. What to look for in an answer:
- Ability to work with others
- How quick they defused the behavior
- The persuasion technique used
“I noticed that my co-worker and I were not on the same page about an order. I sat down with them and listened to them explain the situation. I then explained how I saw it differently, and we were able to work it out and get the client their shipment.”
Q:
Share a streamlined shipping and transportation processes experience in which your attention to detail and thoroughness had an impact on your company.
A:
Look carefully at how they share their experiences. Does their response seem like the company benefited from their skills? A logistics coordinator is someone whom you would want to pay close attention to detail and address the necessary changes that are deemed essential to protect the company. Someone like this will be able to put their detail-oriented skills to use and help the overall shipment process of the company. What to look for in an answer:
- Attention to each aspect of the shipment process
- Talent for recognizing the opportunities for process improvements
- Understanding of quality management principles
“I noticed that there was no checklist for product shipments. I created one and distributed it to every employee. This cut down on the incorrect product deliveries.”
Q:
What are the pros and cons of using a transportation company with flat rate shipping fees?
A:
Logistics coordinators need to have a strong understanding of how shipping and transportation impact a company's bottom line. Logistics coordinators make decisions about the most efficient and cost-effective methods to transport inventory. Interviewers can use this question to learn about a candidate's industry knowledge. They should be able to assess the viability of both flat and variable shipping costs, addressing the benefits of both methods and making a logical choice based on those factors.
Look for these aspects of a strong reply:
- Example benefits and drawbacks
- Strategic thinking
- Planning and organization
Here is one example answer:
"One of the main benefits of flat rate shipping is consistency and predictability. It's easy to project costs when you know the price of shipping will always be the same per shipment, so flat rate shipping is ideal for long-term planning. However, it can also be more expensive than variable rate shipping depending on the contents of the packages. You may pay more through the flat rate than you would shipping by the parcel's measurements."
