Frequently asked questions about Business Intelligence Analysts

What is the difference between a Business Intelligence Analyst and a Business Analyst?

Business Intelligence Analysts and Business Analysts both work to improve their company’s operations by analyzing data, but they differ in their level of seniority and scope of job responsibilities. For example, Business Analysts focus specifically on internal company procedures and review data points to determine areas to improve communication, enhance productivity or deliver better customer service.

In contrast, Business Intelligence Analysts look at company data and data from industry competitors or market research to make comparative assumptions about their company’s current operations in relation to others in their industry. Therefore, Business Intelligence Analysts hold a more senior position and may delegate tasks to Business Analysts.

What are the daily duties of a Business Intelligence Analyst?

On a typical day, a Business Intelligence Analyst reviews their schedule for the day. They analyze data points from customer reviews, employee performance, sales numbers and other metrics. Business Intelligence Analysts participate in meetings with the IT and business development departments. They also use software programs to convert data points into readable charts or graphs. During downtime in their office, Business Intelligence Analysts write reports that summarize key data points and make suggestions on how to improve operations.

What qualities make a good Business Intelligence Analyst?

A good Business Intelligence Analyst has an analytical mindset, enabling them to take various data points and draw meaningful conclusions about what they represent. For example, below-average sales quotas and low employee satisfaction scores imply that sales staff need better training to meet their required expectations. Business Intelligence Analysts also value continued education and enroll in certification courses for topics like data mining and data analytics. This is an essential quality as it ensures their understanding of new and updated software programs.

Who does a Business Intelligence Analyst report to?

A Business Intelligence Analyst typically reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a corporation to provide them with guidance and insights into company operations and industry trends. In larger corporations, a Business Intelligence Analyst may report to a Business Development Executive or Director of Business Development to help determine areas for improvement within the company.
