    Frequently asked questions about Housekeepers

What is the difference between a Housekeeper and a Janitor?

While Housekeepers and Janitors both offer professional cleaning services, Housekeepers focus on residential spaces while Janitors work in commercial areas and focus on general maintenance instead of the small details of cleaning a home. Janitors may spend most of their time using professional cleaning equipment to cover large areas, such as sweeping the halls of a school and disposing of large amounts of trash from the students’ lunch. Housekeepers will clean surfaces in a home while also attending to details such as cleaning dishes and washing linens, while Janitors focus on cleaning the building itself.

What are the characteristics of a good Housekeeper?

To be successful, a Housekeeper should have excellent attention to detail and be able to follow through on all of their tasks. They should be friendly and professional with the ability to recognize the personal boundaries of working in someone’s living space and respecting their privacy. Good Housekeepers are not squeamish about working with messes and find it satisfying to create a clean and welcoming environment for their clients. They are tidy when they work and clean up after themselves as they go to make a space hospitable even during the cleaning.

What are the daily duties of a Housekeeper?

On a typical day, a Housekeeper can visit several private residences to do individual cleanings, or work on multiple areas in a larger building like a dorm or a hotel. They organize their cleaning supplies and visit clients according to a pre-set schedule. They might pick up linens and towels from a commercial laundry, then let themselves into a client home and begin cleaning. Housekeepers can work alone or as part of a team. At the end of their assignment, Housekeepers collect any trash and cleaning materials then lock up before they leave.

Who does a Housekeeper report to?

Housekeepers can report directly to a homeowner or to the manager of a cleaning company. Some institutions have a Head Housekeeper that organizes the other Housekeepers on staff and creates schedules, while others have a General Manager that oversees Housekeepers in addition to other staff members.
