    IT Technician skills and qualifications

IT Technicians should have certain required skills, including the following:

    • Patience: IT Technicians work closely with their customers. Patience is necessary for this field. Often the clients don’t understand what is happening with their system and may not describe it properly. Patience will benefit the IT Tech in understanding the problem and working toward a solution.

IT Technician education and training requirements

IT Technicians are expected to have an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or specific certification in their field of expertise. It is important to stay on top of current trends and technology as updates are released regularly for software, hardware and computer components. This also depends on the company posting the position. Some prefer a set number of years of experience in order to consider any candidate for a middle-level or senior-level position, regardless of education.

What is the difference between an IT Technician and an IT Specialist?

The differences between an IT Technician and an IT Specialist are seniority and their areas of job focus. For example, an IT Technician typically needs to earn an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in information technology. In contrast, IT Specialists usually hold a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in an area like computer science or information technology. Because of their differences in education, IT Specialists tend to perform more advanced repairs, installations or updates to IT software and hardware when compared to IT Technicians.

For example, IT Technicians are responsible for installing computers, routers and other devices for company employees. In contrast, IT Specialists assist Technicians in troubleshooting recurring problems that require additional expertise and making repairs to specific types of computer systems or devices.

What are the daily duties of an IT Technician?

On a typical day, an IT Technician checks their email and voicemail to see if there are any service requests from company employees. They participate in meetings with the IT department to address recent changes to department policies or budgeting needs. For more complex problems, IT Technicians visit other departments, speak with employees, run tests and troubleshoot computer systems.

A good IT Technician has an investigative mindset that motivates them to identify problems with computer systems, perform tests and find the cause of system errors. They value continued education, and they always look for opportunities to enhance their knowledge of computer hardware and software. They also have excellent verbal communication and active listening that allows them to engage with company employees and help them troubleshoot problems with hardware or software programs. Further, a good IT Technician enjoys teamwork and works well with other IT Technicians to complete tasks in a productive manner.

Who does an IT Technician report to?

An IT Technician usually reports to the IT Manager within the IT department. The IT Manager acts as a point of communication for IT Technicians and other personnel and divides tasks among them to maintain a successful department.
