    Frequently asked questions about Mechanics

What is the difference between a Mechanic and a Mechanical Engineer?

The difference between a Mechanic and a Mechanical Engineer is that Mechanics have the responsibility to diagnose, repair and replace parts on vehicles and other machinery. In contrast, Mechanical Engineers have the responsibility to design the vehicles and other machinery that Mechanics fix. For example, a Mechanical Engineer creates a new car model. They determine the correct measurements, materials and design the internal layout of the engine and its relative parts. After consumers purchase the car, they bring it into auto repair shops so Mechanics can perform routine maintenance procedures and help them diagnose problems.

What are the daily duties of a Mechanic?

On a typical day, a Mechanic reviews their appointment schedule for the day and contacts clients to update them on their work progress. Throughout the day, Mechanics complete a variety of tasks on vehicles, including routine oil changes, tire replacements, headlight or taillight repairs or battery replacements. After completing each task, they run tests to ensure the vehicle is safe enough to drive and notify clients that their vehicle is ready.

Mechanics also work on more complex procedures like replacing brake pads, repairing transmissions or spark plugs and replacing car engines. Mechanics take small breaks throughout the day to prevent strain or injury.

What qualities make a good Mechanic?

A good Mechanic has excellent customer service that enhances the credibility of their employer and helps reassure customers in need of vehicle repairs. They value continued education and regularly participate in certification courses for different makes and models. This quality enables them to deliver top-tier service to customers and their vehicles. Further, a good Mechanic enjoys working as part of a team and relies on their coworkers to help them diagnose car problems.

A good Mechanic should also adhere to safety procedures when completing their job as they may need to lay underneath suspended vehicles, handle harmful chemicals or lift heavy tools and objects.

Who does a Mechanic report to?

A Mechanic typically reports to the Senior Mechanic or Mechanic Supervisor to ask for advice and receive specific jobs. They may also report directly to the Auto Repair Service Manager to receive their work schedule and notify them of any work conflicts.
