Frequently asked questions about Production Supervisors

What is the difference between a Production Supervisor and a Quality Control Inspector?

Production Supervisors and Quality Control Inspectors both hold supervisory positions on a production floor, but Production Supervisors oversee all parts of production while Quality Control Inspections focus exclusively on making sure the products themselves meet necessary standards. Quality Control Inspectors examine inventory before the shipping phase, removing items with defects. They have a hands-on role on the production line where they communicate with other manufacturing employees directly.

They report back to Production Supervisors about significant issues, who then research the problem and develop ways to adjust the manufacturing process. Quality assurance is just one part of a Production Supervisor’s job. Unlike Quality Control Inspectors, Production Supervisors also manage staff and supervise different parts of the production process, including transportation and shipping.

What are the daily duties of Production Supervisors?

Production Supervisors begin their shifts by making sure that everything on the production floor is organized and prepared for work to begin. This includes inspecting machinery and making sure all raw materials, supplies and parts are ideal for use in the production process. They identify goals for the day based on company needs and clearly communicate those needs to their staff. Throughout the day, Production Supervisors observe their staff, give feedback and collect data about inspections and production volumes.

Production Supervisors analyze data from the production floor so they can make improvements to the organization. They prepare training opportunities and provide employees with instructions on how to use new equipment or get more out of their current supplies. They develop goals for their team and communicate those requirements to their staff, responding to questions and resolving issues as they occur.

What are the characteristics of a good Production Supervisor?

Good Production Supervisors enjoy solving problems and making sure that complex processes work perfectly. They have excellent technical and interpersonal skills to oversee the entire production process while supporting their staff. They’re great listeners who can accept suggestions and criticism from their employees and implement their feedback to improve both company culture and production processes.

Successful Production Supervisors should be highly alert and perceptive so they can notice problems, accidents or patterns in the workplace that they can address. Being a natural problem-solver who thinks creatively is also an important attribute of an excellent Production Supervisor who continually optimizes the workplace for success, pushing for constant growth.

Who reports to a Production Supervisor?

All employees on a production floor can report to a Production Supervisor about their role in the production process. Because they’re responsible for training new hires, writing employee reviews and implementing improvement plans for their staff, Production Supervisors may act as the direct managers for Warehouse Associates, Quality Inspectors, Machine Operators, Inventory Clerks, Assemblers and other professionals involved in production.
