Pre-search conversations can make a big difference when it comes to clarifying what you need, what you’re looking for, why, and how to attract the right candidates. Understanding your colleagues’ thinking can make for a smoother, more effective hiring process and end up saving you time.
What to do before you post
Align on required vs. nice-to-have qualifications
When multiple people are responsible for determining “fit,” it’s good to be on the same page regarding which qualifications are required and which are preferred. Talk with your colleagues about qualification deal-breakers. There’s a difference between crucial hard skills and preferred (but still important) soft skills.
Job seekers will search first for the need-to-have requirements, so it’s a good idea to place those at the top of your post. This saves time for both you and potential candidates; they’ll assess whether they’re qualified or not right off the bat. Don’t forget to clearly label which qualifications are required and which are preferred.
Resolve any questions about compensation
Job-seekers look for opportunities that meet their salary needs. And employers who include salary information receive up to 2 x more applications*. It’s a win-win. Don’t forget that commissions, tips, bonuses all count as benefits. As does PTO, flexible schedules, location, insurance, culture, and opportunities for growth.
Be sure you and your team are on the same page prior to adding your compensation figure to the Job Post.

Consider allocating budget to upgrade your job posting
Many of our employers find more quality candidates when they upgrade their job posting to a Sponsored Job.
We especially recommend a Sponsored Job to employers who have hard-to-fill positions, need a candidate in a small geographic area, or are looking for a candidate with highly specialized skills.
