What is recruiting automation?
Recruiting automation allows employers to automate repetitive and tedious recruiting tasks and workflows. This can increase productivity, accelerate time-to-hire, keep candidates engaged, reduce cost-per-hire and improve the quality of your hires.
Recruiting automation isn’t about sidelining you and your hiring team. It’s about giving you more quality time to really connect with quality candidates. When done right, recruiting automation means less manual work for hiring managers and recruiters, while keeping you focused on connecting, engaging and hiring candidates.
3 ways to automate your hiring process with Indeed
At Indeed, we have smart recruiting automation technology that’s designed to suit your unique hiring needs, whether you want to outsource parts of your hiring process or keep it entirely in-house. Our main recruiting automation products are Direct to Interview, Direct to Message, Indeed Hiring Events (IHE) and Indeed Hire. Let’s dive into each of these below!
1. Automatically connect with quality candidates who meet your criteria
There are two ways Indeed can help you automatically reach more candidates: Direct to Interview and Direct to Message. With Direct to Interview, Indeed automatically sets up phone or video calls with quality candidates who meet your criteria to fast-track connections. With Direct to Message, you can automatically start conversations with quality candidates.
After sponsoring your job, all you have to do is select your screening criteria (e.g., skills, license/certification) and we’ll automatically screen all applications as soon as people apply. This eliminates the need for you to manually review applications and resumes. From there, you can choose if you want us to 1) schedule a phone or video call with candidates who meet your requirements or 2) send them a custom message on your behalf.
You’ll maintain full control over your hiring workflow and can step in to make manual changes or decisions at any step in the process. For example, you can reschedule or cancel calls and edit your outreach messages at any time. You’ll also have access to everyone who applies.
Automation tools can save you a lot of time. In fact, jobs using Direct to Interview complete a successful interview 33% faster than other jobs. Jobs that opt in are also 18% more likely to report a hire by day seven. The benefits of Direct to Message are also clear: Candidates who receive a message within four hours of their application are 95% more likely to lead to a hire than candidates who receive a message a week later.

Is it right for my hiring needs?
Both Direct to Interview and Direct to Message are often best for busy employers of all sizes who want to quickly connect with candidates for entry- to mid-level roles. It’s also a good option if you’re urgently hiring, need to hire more than one person for a specific job or if you have lower-volume hiring needs.
Generally, low-volume hiring involves a handful of positions. If you’re looking to fill more roles than this, consider one of our other recruiting automation features listed below that are designed for higher-volume hiring needs.
2. Hire for multiple roles at once while automating the manual work
Next up is Indeed Hiring Events (IHE). This solution helps fast-track recruiting, getting you to the hire faster. We deliver the interviews you need by combining Indeed’s reach as a leading hiring and matching platform with our understanding of job seekers and recruiting automation technology in one solution. Not only do we help you create and run hiring events in-person or virtually on Indeed Interview, but we also help to promote your events to our 580M Job Seeker Profiles.
You can think of IHE as a smart recruiting assistant that helps you scale your recruiting without scaling your hiring team. We automate key parts of the recruiting process, including talent attraction, skills assessments, screening and interview scheduling to help you more easily manage the recruiting process through integrated tools. In fact, we help automate more than 70% of recruiting steps to help you interview screened candidates faster. This helps save recruiters up to nine hours per requisition and increases recruiter efficiency by up to 10X.
All of this time saved can help you focus on human touches, such as nurturing prospective candidates, diving deeper into candidates’ motivations and telling your company’s story.

Real-life examples
- Human Technologies Inc. (HTI), which partners with employers to help them build a more engaged workforce, used IHE to obtain 100+ quality candidates in just eight hours, much higher than before the company’s use of IHE.
- Pilot Flying J, one of the largest travel center chains in North America, holds about 300 hiring events per year through Indeed Hiring Events. With IHE, they managed to increase the number of interviews while lowering its overall cost-per-hire from $33 to just $10.
Is it right for my hiring needs?
IHE is ideal for companies with recurring high-volume hiring needs and a desire to speed up the hiring process. Common industries that could benefit from IHE include healthcare, retail, food/beverage, hospitality, transportation and staffing.
High-volume hiring refers to the process of recruiting and hiring a large number of candidates. For instance, this could include evergreen roles such as nursing or one-time high-volume needs such as a new location opening or preparing for the holiday season. It could range from around 50 to hundreds or even thousands of positions that need to be filled on an ongoing basis or within a certain timeframe.
3. Outsource your recruiting process to make more time for connecting
Finally, we have Indeed Hire. With this service, we pair Indeed’s recruiting automation technology with the human expertise of dedicated hiring specialists to optimize your hiring process so you can spend your time more wisely. You can think of it as a flexible extension of your in-house hiring team.
With Indeed Hire, our team of hiring specialists will post, optimize and advertise your jobs on Indeed, screen applicants and manage them on your behalf — all while making the process transparent and easy to understand. You’ll only pay when we make a hire, schedule an interview or send an offer. Plus, you can ramp it up or down depending on your hiring needs.
Is it right for my hiring needs?
Indeed Hire can be particularly useful for mid to large-sized employers who have high-volume hiring needs.
