Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Design Engineer - Machine Design in Maplewood, MN.

An experienced machine design engineer manages the design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning needed to implement web handling, converting, and / or automated assembly technology projects.

This individual will be responsible for the design and schedule to scale up manufacturing capital equipment. Duties include but not limited to: developing equipment concepts, layouts and design, modeling of deflection, and performing structural analysis of various equipment which comprise the line. A high standard of customer service is achieved through customer visits and support operations. Multiple tasks must be managed in a well organized manner. This position works in a team environment.

Management and Execution of Projects. Increased project management responsibility for manufacturing, laboratory, and other facilities projects through organization and management of mulit-discipline teams. Proactively addresses business and technical issues for early identification of issues affecting project success. Leads coordination of complex project timelines. Negotiates and consults with business partners, suppliers, plant and engineering personnel as well as the appropriate management regarding project status, timeliness and cost.

Intellectual Property, Regulations, and Compliance. Protects 3M Intellectual Property through the understanding and appropriate use of competitive technology awareness, government regulation awareness, supplier / consultant agreements, records of invention, patents, and technical notebooks. Contributes to the development of proprietary positions.

Design, Procurement, Installation, and Commissioning. Oversees and plans complex installations, checkouts and startups of new and existing equipment and facilities. Provides accurate project and equipment documentation such project status, cost, schedule, and equipment manuals.

Responsibilities of this position may include direct and/or indirect physical or logical access to information, systems, technologies subjected to the regulations/compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.

U.S. Export Control laws and U.S. Government Department of Defense contracts and sub-contracts impose certain restrictions on companies and their ability to share export-controlled and other technology and services with certain "non-U.S. persons" (persons who are not U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents of the U.S., refugees, "Temporary Residents" (granted Amnesty or Special Agricultural Worker provisions), or persons granted asylum (but excluding persons in nonimmigrant status such as H-1B, L-1, F-1, etc.) or non-U.S. citizens.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications :
  • Minimum Vo-tech degree
  • Minimum of 1 year experience machine design engineering.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • 3+ years experience in converting, slitting, automated assembly, web handling and/or machine design engineering.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of designing manufacturing equipment. Strong background in:
  • Web handling
  • Tension control
  • General web processing
  • They would have experience and practical knowledge in:
  • Design analysis (deflection, structural)
  • Proficient in the use of design project management tools (schedule development, estimating, design resource planning, communication, etc.
  • Experience serving as an interface between design, R&D, and manufacturing
  • Experience with 3D CAD design and product data management archival software (preferably NX 7.5)
  • The candidate must be a self-directed team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • They must demonstrate a design project management skill set, providing leadership through the entire project life cycle from generating initial equipment concepts through final commissioning at the plant site.
