Production Specialist (Bindery)

Responsibilities

Under limited supervision, operates complex bindery finishing equipment on jobs using folders, cutters, stitchers, and miscellaneous other equipment and processes.

  • Maintains confidentiality of Alphagraphics and its clients’ proprietary information.
  • Performs complex bindery functions including:
  • Performs cutting functions using guillotine. Loads sheets and determines appropriate cut patterns to ensure optimal use of paper and finished sized requirements.
  • Performs folding functions using table top and industrial machines. Determines fold patterns to ensure optimal use of paper and finished sized requirements.
  • Performs rotary slitting, perfing and scoring functions.
  • Performs saddle stitching functions using stitcher/trimmer.
  • Performs finishing functions with other peripheral finishing equipment including: manual/hand feed wire-o binder and single-hole drill
  • Performs manual/hand labor functions that require high level of job accuracy and integrity. Reads and follows instructions to determine complex components and assembly for individual jobs.
  • Troubleshoots and attempts to correct equipment and stock problems and errors using knowledge, training, and reference materials.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance. Partial machine disassembly/assembly to accomplish make-ready and operator maintenance.
  • Updates and maintains individual productivity logs. Documents beginning and end of shift daily turnover.
  • Uses online PC, Excel, and procedures to obtain necessary information to perform jobs.
  • Schedules, prioritizes and ensures workflow is efficient.
  • Sets up equipment to run jobs and to ensure documents are processed correctly.
  • Operates and maintains production standards and quality expectations on all equipment and jobs.
  • Performs adjustments to stock and machines as needed.
  • Performs quality and reasonability checks on jobs.
  • Reads, reviews and checks pertinent specifications and instructions on jobs and/or processes.
  • Performs quality, mechanical and reasonability checks of sample jobs against proofs.
  • Sorts, assembles and proofs completed work.
  • Documents job and maintenance activities. Prepares and provides reports to management and/or appropriate staff. Prepares and provides reports of problems to manager and/or appropriate staff for proper documentation and handling.
  • Communicates pertinent maintenance and supply information to appropriate staff.
  • Reacts to change and remains productive.
  • Interacts in cooperative and professional manner, with all levels of employees, vendors and/or clients, in team environment.
  • Organizes tasks and resources to complete work and meet deadlines according to established departmental procedures.
  • Follows Alphagraphics ergonomic and safety policies.
Qualifications

  • Adhere to all quality control standards and consistently apply them to every order
  • Take direction to increase efficiency of production quality and turn-around time through continual process improvement
  • Properly use communication tools to ensure work is completed accurately from shift to shift
  • Monitor and maintain all equipment, complete preventative maintenance, calibrations and minor repairs
  • Follow established safety procedures in use of equipment and in handling product
  • Complete all shift responsibilities like re-stocking and cleaning
  • Communicate appropriately on center’s supply needs
  • Accountable to productivity standards and waste records
  • Able to multi-task in a fast paced production environment that is subject to constant changes in job duties and assignment
  • Handle multiple projects/tasks and meet deadlines
  • Perform all other tasks and assignments as requested by the Production Manager
  • Must be able to work in an environment with strict deadlines
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Able to read work order information to determine job specifications
  • Must have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and solve practical problems as they arise
  • Able to work harmoniously and effectively as part of a work team
  • Understand/operate computer systems and technology relevant to all aspects of print and document services operations
  • Maintain established productivity standards
  • Able to lift, move or carry medium-weight objects (up to 50 pounds)
  • Able to stand and move about for extended periods of time with only short rest breaks; reach, bend, stoop, etc
  • Previous printing, bindery, production or desktop publishing experience a plus
  • Demonstrate teamwork, professionalism and achievement of high levels of productivity
