The School of Communication at the University of Miami welcomes applications for a six-month Visiting Associate/Assistant Professor to serve as Knight Chair beginning in May 2014.
The successful candidate will work with undergraduate and graduate students and faculty at the University and with partner NGOs, Roma journalists and students in five European countries on documentary film projects that aim to increase the visibility of problems that Europe’s Roma communities face with a view to contributing in that way to ending discrimination against the Roma and creating conditions for their social inclusion. The successful candidate will spend three months directing teams in Europe and then teach an advanced production class in documentary journalism and film at the University of Miami between mid-August and mid-November.
A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of ten years’ experience in multimedia story telling is required. Candidates should have expertise in reporting on minority issues, experience working internationally and fluency in DSLR shooting, editing and producing digital media within the Adobe Creative Suite. The position will be housed at the University’s Coral Gables campus but will include fieldwork in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.
The following areas will be emphasized when evaluating candidates:
1. Experience in international reporting on issues related to the role of communication in promoting social justice, advancing human dignity, and implementing civil rights;
2. Expertise in video, audio and non-linear digital editing;
3. Leadership experience within a multimedia newsroom or as a producer or director in documentary production
4. Evidence of success in managing team journalism initiatives;

They practice journalism, teach innovative classes, and create experimental projects and new programs that help lead journalism excellence in the digital age.
