POSITION TITLE: Accounting Specialist
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt, Part-time (24-30 hours per week)
REPORTS TO: Director of Finance
PAY RANGE: $22 - $26 per hour

Michigan Community Action is the statewide professional association for the 27 human services agencies designated as Community Action Agencies. Our member agencies serve individuals and families in all 83 counties of Michigan who are experiencing poverty and are striving for economic self-sufficiency. Our mission is to help people and change lives and our movement was founded during the Civil Rights era and the Johnson administration’s War on Poverty.
Michigan Community Action currently operates via remote work settings and one day per week in-person onsite. Flexible hours may be considered.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Accounting Specialist is responsible for processing accounts payable, monitoring and recording credit card activity, reconciling cash accounts, monitoring grant budgets and allocating costs accordingly, participating in annual audits, safeguarding confidential information, records management, and contributing information essential to making sound business decisions.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive, code, route for approval, and enter accounts payable transactions, including monthly benefit invoices and Efficiency United contractor payments.
- Coordinate processing of vendor payments with Finance Director, i.e., payment date, payment methods, etc.
- Monitor credit card activity weekly, code, route for approval, and record transactions. Notify the Executive Director and Finance Director of any suspicious activity.
- Reconcile bank accounts in accounting software and coordinate the resolution of discrepancies with the Finance Director.
- Partner with Finance Director to visit counterparts at membership agencies throughout the year.
- Execute safe storage of permanent records and coordinate confidential shredding of documents according to MCA records retention policy.
- Maintain human resource documents, i.e., current vehicle insurance certificates, I-9s, updated W-4 forms, etc.
- Collaborate with Finance Director to provide for segregation of duties in alignment with agency policies and procedures.
- Review expense reports for grant activity and advise on spend down requirements as grant/program year ends approach.
- Work alongside Finance Director in providing documentation requested by auditors for annual agency and Efficiency United program audits.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s degree in accounting and/or bachelor’s degree in business and three-five years of experience in a similar role, or a similarly appropriate combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications and MIP or similar accounting Software.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to deliver accurate, timely results.
- Interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, communication, and dependability.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret grant requirements, reports, policies, procedures, financial reports, and legal documents.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Familiarity with non-profit work, history of volunteering and/or working for a non-profit organization.
- Strong math and demonstrated basic accounting skills.
- Attitude & Ethics – Demonstrates a positive attitude & commitment to Community Action Code of Ethics.
- Comfortable working in virtual environment with virtual / online tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

- Out-of-town travel with overnight stay required for the annual Summer Conference.
- Drug and alcohol testing to be conducted if required by funding source(s).
- State and/or federal criminal background checks to be conducted if required by funding source(s).
