About Us:

HYPOTHEkids is a nonprofit based in West Harlem that provides low-income, underrepresented K-12 students with hands-on education and training opportunities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math), setting them on a path toward academic success and well-paying jobs.

HYPOTHEkids recognizes that many communities lack the resources to ignite a passion for STEAM at a young age. That's why we created a fun and engaging K-8 hands-on science curriculum that helps diverse students identify as budding scientists and plants the seeds for a high-tech future. In partnership with the New York Public Library and community-based organizations, we bring this curriculum to under-resourced after school and summer programs. Our HYPOTHEkits include all of the materials and guidance these sites need to teach STEAM easily and effectively.

For high school students, we offer three free training programs:

● STEAM EDU trains high school students who are interested in STEAM education to teach our hands-on science curriculum to younger students in paid summer internships.

● Hk Maker Lab is a rigorous summer program conducted in close collaboration with Columbia

Engineering that provides hands-on training in engineering design.

● New York Bioforce gives students over 100 hours of science research and professional skills training followed by six-week paid internships at world-renowned research and healthcare institutions.

Hours: Varies depending on HYPOTHEkids’ program commitments. Typically 6-10 hours/week . MUST be available on the following days/times to assist with STEAM EDU training at Midwood High School in

Brooklyn:

● Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-5 pm between February 27 and June 13, 2024.

Location: Various program sites throughout NYC and remote

Salary: $20-$30/hr depending on experience

Job Summary:

Reporting to the K-8 Program Manager/Lead Instructor & Director of Operations, the Assistant

Instructor supports the K-8 Program Manager/Lead Instructor with the delivery of STEAM EDU training sessions and HYPOTHEkids out-of-school K-8 programming.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following (Other duties may be assigned):

● Teaching & Training

• Training

■ Assist with training high school students participating in our STEAM EDU program at various high schools throughout New York City

■ Assist the K-8 Program Manager/Lead Instructor with training teachers and out-of-school program staff (e.g., librarians and after-school personnel) on how to facilitate our K-8 hands-on STEAM lessons

• Teaching

■ Teach or assistant teach our hands-on STEAM lessons directly to K-8 students, such as in after-school programs and camps

■ Maintain professionalism and responsiveness when communicating with clients/program sites

■ Assist with the collection and analysis of data to determine the effectiveness of programs

■ Gain a thorough understanding of each hands-on science lesson to properly prepare them for students

Qualifications

● Associates degree or at least two years of college required.

● Bachelor’s degree (Science or Education) preferred.

● Teaching or tutoring experience is preferred.

● Proficient in the use of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PPT).

● Proficient in the use of Canva (or equivalent) and video editing preferred.

● Ability to be adaptable and flexible.

● Strong critical thinking and situational judgment skills.

● Have a can-do attitude and a diligent work ethic.

● Love of teaching and learning, as well as a curiosity about science.

● Sense of humor and appreciation of colleagues.

● Are creative!

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
