JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Teaching Assistant

I. Summary Statement

The Teaching Assistant supports the Lead Teacher by helping to create a caring and safe environment for the children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. The Teaching Assistant must be able to communicate, listen and work well with others in a team environment. The Teaching Assistant will implement developmentally appropriate activities based on the children’s interests and needs under the direction of the Lead

Teacher. The Teaching Assistant works closely with the Lead Teacher of the department they are assigned, keeping that Lead Teacher informed of the events of the room.

II. Principal Responsibilities, Duties, and Tasks

1. Informs the Lead Teacher of parent(s)/guardian(s) concerns;
2. Practices the core competencies of early childhood educators and developmentally appropriate practices;

3. Records and monitors the breakfast, lunch and snacks;
4. Implements daily lesson plans;
5. Works with children individually and/or in small groups;
6. Keeps up-to-date attendance records;
7. Keeps a neat, clean, and attractive classroom;
8. Cares for the materials and supplies and reports needed supplies to the Lead Teacher;
9. Plays with and talks to the children;
10. Encourages interaction, socialization and play;
11. Reads and sings to the children;
12. Models good language skills for the children;
13. Communicates to the parent(s)/guardian(s) information about the daily routine of the children;

14. Protects the children from unsafe situations;
15. Works with any assigned group when requested;
16. Encourages children and provides them with a variety of learning and social experiences appropriate to the age and development of the children in the group;

17. Observes building and grounds and notifies Lead Teacher of necessary improvements or safety needs;

18. Serves as a role model for other employees by maintaining standards for appearance and dress, as well as attendance and meal breaks;

19. Must be familiar with the Employee Handbook;
20. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher, Floor Coordinator and/or Executive Director.

III. Qualifications

1. High school graduate or GED and at least 18 years of age;
2. Enrolled in the West Virginia Certificate in Early Care and Education or equivalent;
3. Well organized and able to work independently;
4. Love of children and sincere interest in their well being;
5. CPR, First Aid, Food Handler’s, and other certificates as required by law;
6. Health history, physical exam, Risk Assessment or Mantoux method tuberculosis exam;

7. Calmness and ability to respond to the unexpected without becoming excited;
8. Be able and willing to increase skills and competence through experience, training and supervision;

9. For safety reasons, may need to pick up student and physically move them, 50 lbs. are the maximum weight we expect the Teaching Assistant would need to move;

10. High degree of confidentiality.

IV. Accountability

The Teaching Assistant is directly accountable to the Lead Teacher of the department they are assigned. The Floor Coordinator and/or Executive Director also oversee all staff and operations of the department.

V. Evaluation

A formal performance evaluation will be conducted annually, and this job description will be referred to as part of the evaluation.

VI. Employee Status

The position is full-time.

VII. Schedule

Scheduling complies with the ratio regulations set by center and state requirements.
