Full time position, 37.5 hours/week

The External Advocate is to assist mental health consumers at Torrance State Hospital and their families with complaints and consultations pertaining to human rights. All activities of the Advocate will be at the request and/or endorsement of the consumer or the family, with the exception systemic violations of rights, or where the consumer is unaware of a rights violation.

Working Hours

Full time; primary work hours will be Monday - Friday, 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. although the employee will be expected to attend occasional evening and/or weekend meetings or stay later to complete high-priority tasks or meet with consumers as the job demands. This position does not have any on-call responsibilities.

Education/Training/Experience

Minimum: Bachelors Degree in a Social Services related discipline.

Preferred: As above with knowledge of legislation and regulations affecting mental health, and experience in mediation and problem solving.
Computer and technology skills required. EOE.

Primary Responsibilities

Investigate allegations, identify relevant documents, data, witnesses, attend treatment team meetings, review relevant laws, policies, and procedures.
Attempt implementation of resolution through voluntary compliance or through facility administration.
Review the commitment procedures of a particular consumer when requested and periodically all involuntary commitments and commitment procedures, unless the consumer objects.
Assist individual treatment teams with devising an Individual Treatment Plan in compliance with consumer rights, when needed.
