HealthForce is a medical staffing agency that focuses on placing contract nursing professionals across the state of Virginia. We are currently working with the local health authority in Richmond to provide a Behavioral Health Technician to work full time with their substance abuse treatment program.

The successful candidate will work 40 hours per week (days, evenings, and overnights) and require a bachelor’s degree with at least 1-year experience working with individuals diagnoses with mental illness, substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders, group facilitation, or equivalent combination of education and experience. We would also prefer that our ideal candidate have their QMHP-T certification as well as a valid driver’s license, and acceptable driving record which will be required for the position.

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled human support work maintaining the safety of clients, monitoring clients that may present with special needs, coordinating meal delivery and ensuring clients are served, performing and assisting clients with laundry duties, encouraging clients to adhere to treatment requirements, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Team Leader, Program Supervisor or Program Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors and assists clients with activities of daily living.
  • Monitors facility and grounds and whereabouts of clients; conducts inspections according to schedule and need.
  • Performs customer service duties by meeting and greeting clients upon arrival for treatment; admits clients to the unit or facility by taking inventory of belongings; conducts tours and orientation of unit; cleans and maintains bedrooms when required.
  • Maintains the safety and cleanliness of the unit.
  • Ensures laundry duties for unit and clients are done in a timely manner; assists clients with special needs.
  • Monitors performance of client job function assignments.
  • Performs filing duties and provides directions.
  • Prepares and maintains clinical documentation in the electronic health record and completes progress notes; completes shift reports.
  • Organizes the group rooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, etc.
  • Coordinates discharges in full consultation with the treatment and/or case management team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of community and Authority resources, programs, and of regional and State sources for the community service population; general knowledge of interviewing and supportive counseling techniques; general knowledge of social casework techniques; some knowledge of human development and behavior; some knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of individual, family and group therapy; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, law enforcement, clients, associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree with coursework in psychology, social work, counseling, sociology, counseling, nursing or related field and moderate experience in clinical documentation. At least 1year experience working with individuals diagnoses with mental illness, substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders, group facilitation, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree in any field with QSAP or QMHP designation will be considered.

Physical Requirements

The Behavioral Health Technician must demonstrate the physical capabilities necessary to perform job tasks, which may include physical interaction with combative or aggressive patients; prolonged standing, walking and/or sitting; lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies. Will be exposed to all patient elements, including threat of physical violence and possible exposure to infectious or contagious diseases. Subject to stress, frustration and fatigue.

Position requires ability to communicate verbally, in writing and over the telephone; ability to bend, stoop, reach up and down and carry. Occasionally may be required to lift/carry patients and patient luggage, as well as to provide

physical restraint to aggressive or combative patients. Much of the day is spent communicating with patients and documenting such communication in the patient record. Should be able to lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of up to 25 pounds. Must be able to maintain balance when walking, standing or running on slippery wet surfaces. Must be able to kneel and crawl, if necessary, for instance in performing CPR, etc. Must be able to coordinate eyes and hands, as well as to manipulate small objects quickly and accurately. Must be able to work with hands in turning and placing objects in place. Must be able to perceive objects accurately as to size, temperature or texture. Most of the day is spent indoors (90%) and 100% of day is spent working with or around others. Position requires high mental alertness and stress/pressure may be high. Hours of work may be irregular and work is variable.

Special Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Abilty to work weekends, variable shifts and holidays.
  • Basic typing and computer skills.
