The Black Mamas Community Collective (a.k.a. Black Mamas ATX) Sister Doula program exists to support Black mothers and birthing persons during pregnancy, childbirth, and for one year after giving birth, in order to reduce incidences of perinatal morbidity and mortality. BMATX Sister Doulas are specially trained to provide culturally congruent tailored care to meet the individual needs of each client and their family by building trusting relationships that offer strength-based services and reduces barriers to care. The Sister Doula is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular contact with clients in their caseload, providing community outreach, and will advocate for clients receiving services.

Duties (include, but are not limited to):

  • Provides information, education, and resources that will prepare the client and their family for the birth process and through one (1) year postpartum.
  • Assists the client in establishing a birth plan and postpartum plan, with support for accomplishing those goals.
  • Attends and supports the client, their family, and/or support person(s) throughout the birth process.
  • Collaborates with the BMATX doula team to manage and improve the birth experience of the client and their family.
  • Identifies needs and refers clients to additional community resources, including health care and other basic necessities.
  • Maintains written documentation of all activities and contact with clients and their families using Black Mamas ATX's data platform.
  • Assists in the planning, preparation and co-facilitates monthly Sister Circle support groups as needed.
  • Conducts home visits (or virtual visits based on COVID restrictions) with clients on caseload, providing culturally congruent prenatal and postpartum support services including but not limited to light housekeeping, infant care, and holistic healthcare.
  • Attends required Doula based training in order to enhance skills needed to support clients and their families.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with community agencies and medical professionals.
  • Assists with BMATX outreach and recruitment activities.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings.
  • Attends and participates in relevant committees, collaboratives and partnerships.
  • Delivers community education presentations and workshops.
  • Represents BMATX at conferences and public relations events, as necessary.

Education and Work Experience

  • Preference given to those with Doula certification, lived experience, and experience working with Black mothers and birthing persons.
  • Additional language fluency in French and/or Spanish a plus.

Additional Information and Requirements

  • Local travel required (Austin 5-County Metro Area)
  • Applicants must be able to work non-traditional, flexible hours, including evenings and weekends

Job Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Doula Program Manager.
  • Position is non-exempt.
