Port City is looking to hire a brewer/cellar person to join our team and assist in the day-to-day activities necessary to elevate our craft beer. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas in the brewery through cross-training.

Preference will be given to candidates with 1 to 3 years of experience in a commercial brewery or in sanitary food/beverage processing; however we may be willing to train the right person with the right attitude. Our ideal candidate is someone who can adapt to any brewing environment and who can implement good plant hygiene. Above all, they should have a deep passion for producing consistently high quality beer and be eager to learn.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit and maintain proficiency in brewing tasks required of a brewer in a 16,000+ bbl./year brewery.
  • Ability to perform and troubleshoot all functions of the brewery and cellar per standard operating procedures, including but not limited to, raw ingredient handling, wort production, yeast management, dry-hopping, barrel handling, clarification, clean-in-place-systems, quality assurance, record keeping, and general cleaning.
  • Adhere to SOPs to elevate process control and minimize variability from operator to operator.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of environment and equipment in accordance with QA/QC standards.
  • Adhere to safety protocols in all activities.
  • On a rotating basis, perform routine bottling line work, such as loading operating supplies into assigned machines, ensuring smooth machine operation and alleviating problem situations.
  • Support initiatives to ensure minimal waste during manufacturing.
  • Communicate any known mechanical, raw material, and/or beer quality issues to the Leadership Team.
  • Ensure that production areas are always clean and organized.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in Brewing Science, Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field, or a brewing-related certification, is considered a plus.
  • Able to follow SOPs and safety protocols
  • Able to accurately document and keep records
  • Critical thinking and troubleshooting
  • Organization and punctuality
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • In depth experience with automated and manual brewing and cellaring systems along with forklift experience are strong pluses.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to life 55+ pounds
  • Able to be on your feet for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor environment which may be loud, slippery, hot and humid, or cold.
  • Able to work in a hazardous environment (hot, cold, steam, chemicals, confined spaces, etc.)
  • Flexible Schedule (days, nights, weekends, overtime)
