Bridge Inspection Department Manager

Job Summary:

Department Managers are responsible for overseeing and managing, the activities of Project Managers, Engineers, Inspectors, Designers, and Technicians within their Department to ensure that the goals and objectives of their department are met. They also work closely with the other Department Managers and Division Manager to ensure that the goals and objectives of the Company are met.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the managerial direction of the Department
  • Coordinate and facilitate internal staffing assignments between Project Managers and other Department Managers
  • Oversee all projects being performed by Bridge Inspection Department staff
  • Monitor project schedules and budgets and recommend recovery plans if necessary
  • Ensure that Project Managers and Technical Staff have the necessary training and tools to perform the duties expected of them
  • Provide technical oversight of design and deliverables produced by the Department, and ensure Quality Management Program and QA/QC procedures are being followed by Project Managers
  • Conduct performance reviews of Bridge Inspection Department staff
  • Contribute to marketing efforts through attendance at industry functions, assistance with proposals and presentations, and client visits
  • Coordinate with Human Resources on staffing needs for the Department. Recruit, interview, hire, or terminate Bridge Inspection Department staff as appropriate, with approval of the Division Manager and Human Resources
  • Oversee the preparation of technical and price proposals, or prepare them if PM workload dictates

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering or approved equivalent required

Training Requirements (licenses/programs/certificates):

  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI)

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Principles and practices of inspection, design, construction and maintenance of bridges
  • Roadway/highway design
  • Scheduling and budgeting
  • PennDOT and PA Turnpike Commission contracting procedures and project development process. ODOT and WVDOH is a plus.

Skills Requirements:

  • Demonstrated organization and planning skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering design, plans, reports and specifications
  • Demonstrated leadership, motivation, and mentoring skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills

Experience: 15 years minimum
