Position Title: Bus Driver Trainer

Department: Transportation

Reports to: Assistant Regional Superintendent and Regional Superintendent

FLSA Class: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for delivering the Illinois Initial and Refresher Bus Driver training and the federal Entry Level Driver theory training. This role requires maintaining a comprehensive understanding of all laws, regulations, and procedures governing school bus drivers and student transportation, while serving as a key resource for safe driving practices and compliance at the local, state, and federal levels. The position collaborates closely with the Regional Office of Education to coordinate and deliver initial, refresher, and ELDT training programs, ensuring all sessions are scheduled, equipped, and executed effectively based on district needs.

Responsibilities also include managing training logistics, maintaining accurate records and reporting, and ensuring all licensure and certification requirements remain current. Ongoing communication with regional stakeholders, including transportation directors and ROE leadership, is essential to align training efforts and address evolving needs. Additionally, the role supports outreach efforts through marketing materials and contributes to continuous program improvement throughout the year.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 21 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a CDL with passenger endorsement and a CDL with school bus endorsement.
  • Have at least 2 years experience driving a school bus
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, which has not been revoked, suspended, or canceled within the 3 years prior to the date of application.
  • Must be able to meet all requirements for a school bus driver permit in accordance with the Illinois Administrative Code Chapter 2 SEC. 1035.15.
  • Pass all State of Illinois written testing and behind-the-wheel examinations.
  • Maintain required biennial First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and students.
  • Physically be able to bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, carry, pull, push, and climb steps frequently and sit extensively.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 45 lbs.
  • Repetitive use of arms, hands, and shoulders especially on right side to operate door opener.
  • Repetitive use of legs and feet.
  • Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a wheelchair lift.
  • Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.

SCHEDULING

The work hours for this position will vary. The schedule is subject to change with district demands. Pay includes $25/hour up to $300 for initial and ELDT training and up to $100 for each refresher training.

Anticipated need:

  • Conduct 2-4 Initial (Second Division) Bus Driver training along with ELDT Theory and First Division Initial training, as needed. Approximately 10-12 hours/training each. Typically these trainings are offered throughout the year on Saturdays or divided across 2 evenings or weekends.
  • Conduct annual refresher training within the anniversary date for each district in the region. Minimum of 2 hours of training each at approximately 6 locations in July and August annually.
  • Attend the annual Illinois Bus Driver Trainer training, generally held in June over 1 day. (Travel will be required)
  • Meet in person with the Assistant Regional Superintendent at least once per year
  • Maintain regular communication via phone conversation, email, or in person meeting throughout the year with the Assistant Regional Superintendent and Regional Office of Education Administrative Assistant
