Development Manager
Full-time, 65-75k with potential for performance-based bonuses each year.

Our Mission:
Our mission is to change the way stories are told and understood. We produce events that feature live storytellingsupplemented with music, photography, video and audio. We have partnered with 25+ news orgs across the country and journalists from the Washington Post, the New York Times, KQED, ProPublica, Grist and more. In addition to Pulitzer-Prize winning journalists, past storytellers include comedians, poet laureates, founders, incarcerated people and acclaimed scientists.

Back Pocket Mediaformed out of a radio show in San Francisco when we decided to turn our on-air program into a live event. Local Live(s)- our mission-driven journalism series - launched out of the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, a bicoastal collaboration between Columbia and Stanford University. We have since received support from Meta, Future Earth and the Knight Foundation.

As the Development Manager, you will report directly to our founding team to lead all fundraising activities, including prospecting, pitching and maintaining relationships with corporate sponsors and individual donors as well as pursuing grants from foundations. You will also fundraise for specific events, including a large-scale Storytelling Festival that will feature 5-7 Philadelphia news orgs sharing their best stories on stage. Your work will transform our operational capacity as we grow, help us explore new verticals and share powerful stories with a broader audience.


  • Fundraise for specific events across the country (ex: Storytelling Festival in Philadelphia, Back Pocket Presents in San Francisco)
  • Design pitch materials and sales process for corporate sponsorship
  • Find and secure local and national grant opportunities (ex: National Endowment for the Arts)


  • Create and implement revenue strategy across all streams (sponsorship, grants, individual donors, special projects).
  • Design and launch an individual donor program.
  • Pitch special projects, events and workshops to new verticals.


  • Lead fundraising efforts as we launch Storytelling Festivals in new cities.
  • Serve as primary contact with Back Pocket's fiscal sponsor for fundraising purposes.
  • Provide ongoing care and stewardship to corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors.

Your Background:

  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience with grant prospecting, application writing, and final reporting or 3+ years of demonstrated experience, prospecting, pitching, and winning corporate sponsorships on a national and local level.
  • Experience building (or working with a team to build) an individual donor program that generated over 100k annually.
  • Prior experience in event or journalism development in a non-profit or a public media setting.
  • Track record identifying new revenue opportunities and launching programs around them.
  • Thrives in a remote work environment and is able to identify the next important task.
