SUMMARY STATEMENT

Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator the Camp Counselor will assist with planning, organizing, and supervision of recreational and camping activities for youth ages 10 to 18 years of age, in outdoor settings in County Parks, State Parks, and National parks. The Camp Counselor will create and manage calendars of activities, ensuring a diverse range of engaging and meaningful options for participants. This role involves supervising and mentoring youth during day and camp activities, help youth learn new skills, ensure their safety, and facilitating fun activities. Be a role model, foster a positive and supportive environment in a natural outdoor setting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DIRECT SERVICES

  • Camp counselors are responsible for the safety and well-being of campers, ensuring they follow all rules and regulations.
  • Help create and lead a variety of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, and games, tailored to the campers' age and interests.
  • Counselors are to be positive role models, provide guidance and support to youth, develop social skills, build confidence and engage them in all activities.
  • Communicate with campers, parents, and other staff members, fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment.
  • Able to handle minor injuries and emergencies, and respond to situations that require immediate attention and/or action.
  • Other General Camp Duties including maintaining cleanliness of the camp and/or facilities, assist with meals prep, camp set up and breakdown, and other tasks as needed.
  • Plan and implement outreach events, social activities, and other community services as needed.
  • Provide assistance to clients in navigating and procuring basic needs and resources. (food/clothing/ housing/transportation).
  • Assist clients with transportation to/from camping activities/events.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the program manager or coordinator.
  • Assist with facility operations and maintenance as requested by program manager or coordinator.
  • Provide other services as assigned.

  • Empathy and Patience: Ability to understand and respond to the needs and preferences of participants, particularly in vulnerable populations.
  • Knowledge of Relevant Regulations and Best Practices: Understanding of health and safety regulations, as well as best practices for activity planning and implementation
  • General Requirements and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's):
  • Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring. Valid California Driver's License and current automobile insurance
  • Must pass a background check and Livescan
  • Physical exam and proof of TB clearance
  • Lived experience and a minimum of 6 months sobriety
  • Ability to get along well with others, be punctual, pleasant, and tactful with professional appearance and conduct.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, clients and their families, community organizations, and the general public.
  • Ability to be culturally competent of age groups, gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, and diverse cultures.

Physical Requirements:

Moderate Duty

This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Ascending and descending ladders and staircase will be more frequent. An example is this position frequently will be moving and organizing agency supplies.
