Position Summary

The Chief Building Official oversees permitting, inspections, and code compliance for residential and commercial construction within the Village of Woodmere. This role focuses on plan review, coordination with business owners and developers, and ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and engineering standards.

The Chief Building Official reports to the Mayor and provides overall leadership of the Village’s building and zoning functions. This position supervises the Zoning Inspector and Permit Technician, manages enforcement activities, coordinates with legal counsel, and represents the Village of Woodmere before boards and commissions. The Chief Building Official is responsible for training and mentoring staff to ensure consistent code interpretation, effective enforcement, and high-quality customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee permitting, plan review, and inspection processes, including third-party inspectors
  • Interpret and enforce building codes, zoning regulations, and local ordinances
  • Manage complex code enforcement cases and coordinate with legal counsel
  • Review development plans and provide technical guidance to officials and staff
  • Serve as liaison to Council, Board of Zoning Appeals, and other boards
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Zoning Inspector and Permit Technician

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field experience (preferred)
  • State Certified Building Official (CBO) required
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, and construction practices
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills

Work Schedule

  • Part-time position; approximately 10–18 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule with availability for inspections, meetings, and permit processing

Additional Information

This position includes both office and field work, including site visits and inspections.
