Mariposa Kids is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and inspiring children’s natural curiosity and independence through free play. Our mission is centered on providing SAFE SPACES, opportunities for FREE PLAY, and fostering a strong SENSE OF COMMUNITY. With over 10 years of experience, Mariposa Kids creates vibrant communities that promote social-emotional growth for children, focusing on children’s experiences and supporting their development outside of school hours.

We operate out of two clubhouses in the Mission and Bernal Height neighborhoods of SF (James Rolph Jr. Park & Playground & 3361 Mission St), offering after-school programs for children in grades TK-5 and summer camps, with an emphasis on maintaining quality adult-to-child ratios, providing outdoor activities, and engaging children in fun, developmentally appropriate programming.

Role Overview:

The Children and Families Coordinator will oversee and facilitate programming and activities as part of our new Children & Family Program kicking off in the spring 2025. This role will be tasked with overseeing the morning activities for children ages 0-5 and be a member of the Recreation Leader team in the afternoons serving children aged 5-11. The role requires an individual who is enthusiastic about creating a nurturing environment where both children and parents can thrive. The Coordinator will work closely with the program staff and the community, ensuring that daily activities run smoothly, parents feel supported, and children have access to meaningful play and learning.

Key Responsibilities:

Morning Program (0-5 Year Olds):

• Lead, facilitate, and supervise morning programs that engage both parents and children.
• Ensure activities are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and engaging.
• Gather feedback from parents about the activities through informal & formal check-ins. Be skilled at incorporating feedback as necessary.
• Create and oversee other child and parent morning opportunities for families in partnership with the leadership team.

Afternoon & Summer Programs (5-11 Year Olds):

• Partake in the facilitation of the After-School Program and Summer Camps for children aged 5-11.
• Facilitate activities that encourage social-emotional development and play.
• Ensure the children’s safety and engagement in free play and structured activities.
• Assist with supervising playground and clubhouses areas to ensure a positive social environment.
• Build relationships with parents/families.

Parent Support & Volunteer Coordination:

• Create a welcoming space for parents to connect with each other and their children.
• Encourage parent volunteers to engage in activities like reading circles, helping with classes, and offering input on program design.
• Be a point of contact for parents, addressing any concerns or feedback they may have.
• Offer suggestions and guidance for parents on parenting and child development as needed.

Administrative & Logistical Tasks:

• Assist with preparing for the day’s activities, ensuring all supplies are ready and available.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the program space.
• Track and report on program attendance, parent feedback, and activity outcomes.
• Maintain records for volunteer hours, and any relevant paperwork.

Qualifications:

• Bilingual (English/Spanish required) to effectively communicate with a diverse family population in the Mission and Bernal Heights.
• Minimum 1-2 years experience working with children aged 0-5, in a school or community-based setting. Additional experience working with children ages 6-11 is preferred.
• Strong understanding of early childhood development, parenting techniques, and behavior management.
• Ability to lead and engage a group of children in developmentally appropriate activities.
• Comfortable working with parents and families to foster positive relationships and engagement.
• 1-2 years experience with community-building, parent involvement, and volunteer coordination.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Compassionate, patient, and approachable demeanor.

Additional Requirements:

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Able to work during program hours (Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends).
• Able to pass a criminal background check.
• CPR/First-Aid Certification required within one month of employment.
• Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the most recent flu vaccines (or exempt).
• Tuberculosis clearance.

Physical Ability:

Requirements include strength, mobility, stamina to climb, bend, stretch, stand, kneel, walk, stoop, extend legs, and stamina to lift, carry, push or pull objects, which weigh 40 pounds. Ability to reach horizontally and vertically with arms. Physical ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking or active, and 50% standing.
