Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, who represents the Fourth District (Campbell, Santa Clara, West San Jose and Burbank), is looking for a passionate public servant to join her diverse and dynamic team as a Policy Aide with a focus on Children and Families. This person will join a team of eleven individuals who serve the citizens of the Fourth District and Santa Clara County, and become one of six policy aides who staff the Supervisor on matters that come before the Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Ellenberg cares deeply about the health and well-being of the nearly 400,000 children under the age of 18 who call Santa Clara County home. She sits on the board of FIRST 5 Santa Clara County where she is a steward for programs and services dedicated to improving the quality of life for children in our county and is an advocate for accessible childcare for all and working toward building out capacity in our region.

She has done work to create the county’s first Children’s Budget, Office of Children and Family Advocacy and to make record investments to support children in Santa Clara County, including on-campus wellness centers at our local schools, access to healthy food, and recovery supports post-pandemic.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Providing the Supervisor with strong policy analysis within the issue areas of responsibility, including childcare creation/support, access to preventative care including mental and physical health care, food, and open space.
  • Prepare the Supervisor for Board of Supervisors meetings, and other bodies on which the Supervisor serves by preparing background memos, talking points, and staffing as needed.

The ideal candidate for this position will have knowledge of, interest in, and passion for the following content areas:

  • Public service, particularly being responsive to the issues facing the residents of the Fourth Supervisorial District
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal systems that touch children.
  • Santa Clara County, both its leadership and its residents
  • Best practices in early childhood supports and preventions, and its intersections with other policies including mental health and housing, from across the state and nation

Additionally, candidates should be able to demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

  • Excellent writing capabilities, specifically as it relates to government documents and memoranda.
  • Ability to analyze complex policy issues from multiple points of view.
  • Ability to review, analyze and summarize complex documents including qualitative and quantitative data, legal briefs, policies, program plans, budgets and other governmental reports.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and to build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with other public officials, County staff, partner organizations and others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as both a leader on and contributor to projects.
  • Ability to project manage projects from start to finish. Team members regularly support on intersectional issues – ensuring they have the expectations, directions and deliverables is key.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation: The position of Board Aide is an at-will position reporting to Supervisor Ellenberg’s Deputy Chief of Staff and, ultimately, to Supervisor Ellenberg.

The role is compensated with an annual salary of $81,000-$92,000, as well as a generous Santa Clara County benefit and pension package, including medical, dental and vision insurance.
