Natural Resources Design: Civil Engineer - April 2021

The Company

Natural Resources Design is an ecologically-focused landscape design firm offering design and build services to residential, commercial, and public clients. We specialize in green infrastructure for municipal projects, focusing on schools and parks, using creative and regenerative designs. We’re a diverse company dedicated to empowering our people. Our team includes 1 senior civil engineer, 3 designers, and our production team. We serve clients across the DC metro area.

Civil Engineer Role

Our company is growing rapidly, so we’re seeking a Civil Engineer to work closely with our designers, project managers, and installation team to implement LID designs for our municipal, commercial, and residential clients. The candidate will work with our current Senior Civil Engineer to learn our approach to community-based design, focusing on vegetated or living BMP facilities. We’re looking for a versatile, creative, collaborative engineer who brings both solid experience and an interest in learning and growing in a stimulating environment. The role offers the challenges and rewards of handling a wide variety of engineering projects.

Civil Engineer Job Duties:

  • Manage, design, develop, create, and maintain small-scale through to large-scale construction projects in a safe, timely and sustainable manner.
  • Carry out technical and feasibility studies, including on-site investigations and analysis of maps, tests, reports, and other data, and draw up plans that satisfy technical specifications.
  • Review project sites to identify engineering issues and design green infrastructure solutions and/or stormwater management designs that work within site, design, and budget constraints.
  • Assess project risks, materials, and costs; provide cost estimates for proposals; and coordinate with a variety of stakeholders in pre-proposal and project phases.
  • Comply with guidelines and regulations including permitting; advise management on changes in regulations.
  • Use BuilderTrend (our project tracking software) to capture client information, create estimates, and provide status updates on projects.
  • Actively participate in marketing efforts for engineering work, including sales calls and proposal prep.

Civil Engineer Requirements:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer, or qualified to sit for the PE Civil exam in October 2021, including a bachelors degree in engineering from an accredited school and at least 4 years of relevant engineering experience under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Proficiency in site layout, grading, utility design, erosion control, Low Impact Stormwater Management, regulatory approvals etc.
  • Project management and supervision skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D or similar.
  • Self-directed problem-solver, able to figure out how to accomplish tasks; unafraid to ask for guidance when needed.
  • Collaborative and adaptable to the needs of the company; comfortable with quickly shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Civil Engineer Position Details:

This position will be a full time salaried exempt position, reporting to our current Senior Civil Engineer.

Pay and benefits:

  • Pay range: $78,000-115,000 depending on experience.
  • Benefits for full time staff include PTO, 50% of employee’s health insurance premium, 401k.

Location and schedule:

  • Work will be performed from home or in the field until at least August 2021, due to COVID restrictions. Once COVID restrictions are lifted, the work location will be flexible. Office is located in the Brookland area of DC, near Catholic University. Roughly 20-30% of time is out in the field.
  • Work schedule is flexible; regular business hours are 7:30 am - 6 pm. Must be willing to work outside regular hours as needed to support urgent company needs.
