Collections Inventory Intern
Part-time, 12-24 hours/week
$16.00/hour, non-exempt
12-week, temporary position

Position Description

As a member of the Material Culture department, the Collections Inventory Intern provides support for the inventory and collections management of the collections at Ford House.

Responsibilities

· Assist in conducting inventories.

· Photograph or digitize objects and enter information into collections management database, PastPerfect.

· Physically mark objects.

· Research object provenance.

· Rehouse objects for movement to collections storage facility.

· Catalog and number found in collections artifacts or new acquisitions.

· Assist with other collections management duties such as general collections care, preventative conservation, cataloging backlog, research requests, donation processing, relocating artifacts, and preparing objects for exhibition.

Internship Goals

· Provide training similar to that which would be given in an educational environment.

· Work closely with regular employees qualified in the intern’s field of study.

· Direct opportunity to learn about objects housed in the museum collections.

· Ability to practice and improve organizational and problem-solving skills.

· Direct opportunity to handle objects, while learning relevant and applicable collections management skills.

· Opportunity to learn proper preventative conservation methods and storage for collections materials.

· Practice precision in data entry and organization.

· Learn about a wide variety of materials and how they are stored, handled, and organized in a museum setting.

· Learn practical and relevant museum/collections management skills that will transfer to future opportunities for working in museums and cultural institutions.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Ability to sit at a computer terminal for long periods of time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Uniform Requirements

This position does not require a uniform. Daily attire is business casual.

Skills and Requirements

· Current undergraduate or graduate student studying history, museum studies, library science, American studies, archeology, or a closely related field preferred but not required. Recent graduates of such programs may also apply.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage projects effectively.
  • Ability to function independently as well as on a team.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable speaking to groups and able to communicate effectively with visitors and other staff members.
  • Problem solving skills.

Work Schedule, Pay, & Other Information

· The position pays $16.00/hour.

· Schedule is a variation from 12-24 hour weeks or 144-288 hours per week total.

· Work hours are 8a-4:30p with two fifteen-minute paid breaks and a half hour unpaid lunch.

· Required to work three shifts per week; weekly schedule is flexible.

· This position does not include PTO, sick time, health or medical benefits.
