Full job description

Position Description

Communication Teachers (CTs) provide instruction to students and families learning the skills to communicate through text-based multimodal approaches. This position requires a thorough knowledge of best practices of teaching students who spell, point, or type to communicate. Prior experience and a demonstrated history of providing student support and training / coaching with Rapid Prompting Method, Spellers Method, Spelling to Communicate, or other AAC teaching strategies is required. Reach Every Voice does not align with or use any particular methodology and will use your training background as a base to help you develop the skills to support our students in individualized ways. CTs may support nonspeaking or minimally speaking autistic individuals at the Reach Every Voice offices or in home or community environments.

Specific Areas of Responsibility

  • Commit to working for Reach Every Voice as a Communication Teacher for 18 months after the successful completion of a training period. Training consists of 2-8 weeks of a hybrid online and in-person experience, which is paid at a training rate lower than the position rate. Length of training will be determined based on a candidate’s experience supporting students and families with text-based communication.
  • Work between 5-15 hours weekly directly supporting REV students in the office or in client homes / community settings. CTs provide communication instruction and coaching to their clients to help them access educational, social, and other opportunities.
  • Have a reliable form of transportation and be able to work both at the REV Office and in client homes. Job postings will specify whether employment will be based in Montgomery County or Baltimore County / Anne Arundel County areas. Employees will not be required to transport clients in this position.

Specific Job Requirements

Under the supervision of the Program Director or Education Specialist, Communication Teachers will teach students and families best practices for scaffolding instruction for multiple response levels, provide best practices for supporting client emotional and physical regulation, and plan and implement individualized lessons with appropriate supports for students of varying abilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates should have an understanding and appreciation of disability as a natural variation of the human condition. Reach Every Voice is a neurodiversity affirming practice and does not use compliance-driven models to support our students. Applicants should be willing to learn about best ways to support autistic people from those people themselves.

Applicants should have prior experience and a demonstrated history of providing student support with Rapid Prompting Method, Spellers Method, Spelling to Communicate, or other AAC teaching strategies. Applicants should note that Reach Every Voice does not align with any particular methodology and will use your training background as a base to help you develop the skills to support our students in individualized ways.

Additionally, applicants should be able to proficiently speak and write in English. Applicants must be eligible for work in the United States, submit to and pass a criminal background check, and complete training regarding mandated reporting of child abuse and neglect and use of positive behavior supports. These requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform this job.
