Position Purpose

The Communications Assistant supports IAATO’s communications function through content and resource creation, media monitoring, event coordination, and administrative support. This entry-level role contributes to executing the communications five-year strategy under the direction and mentorship of the Communications Manager.

This remote position is open to candidates who live and work in the USA or Canada and requires the successful candidate to work from home with occasional international travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

§ Draft press releases, website copy, social media posts, and newsletters.

§ Support the Director of Communications with the growth of IAATO’s Antarctic Ambassador education and outreach program by working with the association’s Antarctic Ambassadorship Committee (AAC) to create educational materials and engagement opportunities.

§ Research IAATO’s audiences and communication trends.

§ Assist in planning and scheduling content across digital platforms.

§ Monitor and log media coverage; track engagement metrics.

§ Respond to routine media and public enquiries under supervision.

§ Help coordinate digital events (webinars, forums) with the Events Manager & Communications Manager.

§ Provide administrative support to the Communications Manager and Director of Communications.

§ Support the communications team and/or wider secretariat with crisis communications.

§ Assist members with communications and branding-related requests, as appropriate.

Other Duties

§ Assist with branding and communications support for Secretariat colleagues.

§ Help prepare presentations and communication materials for international meetings.

§ Support collaboration with partner organisations on shared initiatives

§ Attending and presenting at meetings

Technical Skills and Experience

§ Some experience or training in media, communications, or journalism (internships acceptable)

§ Strong writing and proofreading skills

§ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)

§ Familiarity with digital tools (social media, CMS, basic analytics)

§ Willingness to learn new tools, including video and graphic editing software

§ Detail-oriented, with good time management and teamwork skills

Education/Certifications/Licensure

§ Bachelor’s degree orFoundation certificate or Apprenticeship in a communications, marketing or other written or digital communications field.

Language Skills

§ Fluent in written and spoken English

§ Languages other than English are a benefit, but not essential.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will sit for long periods of time, and may use repetitive wrist and hand motions involved in sorting and handling documents. The employee is regularly required to reach, with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision. Employee will have close visual contact with a computer monitor constantly.

Pay: $41,000.00 - $46,000.00 per year
