Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.
NIAR is looking for a talented Avionics/Electrical Engineer to join our growing, innovative team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as an Avionics/Electrical Engineer with NIAR to support various diverse customer programs.
Essential Functions:
- Develop system design concepts in areas of Power Generation/Distribution, Flight Guidance System, Navigation, Flight Control, or Communication from clean-sheet or via modifying an existing system.
- Support trade studies and new business proposals for Aircraft System upgrades/modifications.
- Manage system requirements and trace those from concept through Civilian or Military Aircraft certification projects.
- Develop system specifications and work with systems suppliers to realize those specifications.
- Integration of those components into new or modified aircraft systems.
- Draft Certification Plans and work with Designees to determine Means of Compliance.
- Support Systems Safety specialists in analyzing and optimizing system design.
- Support Design specialists in optimizing system installation and interfaces.
- Provide liaison support to Operations in modifying, maintaining and troubleshooting test or modification assets.
- Produce engineering documentation (drawings, test plans & procedures, test reports, compliance reports) in support of system certification.
- Support flight test activities, including test aircraft preparation and test data analysis.
- Develop and maintain effective two-way communications both internally and with outside customers/suppliers to ensure adequate dissemination of information.
- Provide periodic reviews and update presentations to management.
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace or Electrical Engineering or related field
- Five (5) years of engineering experience or related aviation technical or systems experience.
- This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”.
- Working knowledge of FAA14CFR Part 23/25 or Military airworthiness regulations and application of FAA Advisory Circulars
- Experience with application of generic ARP specifications (including ARP1870, ARP4754, ARP4404, as well as process specs), DO-160G, DO-178C, DO-254, MIL-STD-704
- Working knowledge of EMI, EMC, HIRF, and Lightning effects
- Experience with FAA, EASA and other foreign certification authorities
- Experience of integrating complex systems and managing systems supplier
- Understanding of 2D & 3D design concepts
- Working knowledge of generic CAD design tool processes
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office programs
- Professional and diplomatic demeanor
- Strong sense of accountability and integrity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Time management skills to support multiple concurrent projects
All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
