Job Description:
Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services. NIAR is looking for a talented Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer to join our growing, innovative computational aerodynamics team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a CFD Engineer to support various diverse customer program efforts.
Essential Functions:
The individual in this position will contribute professionally to a variety of challenging applications of CFD to assist the NIAR team in creating real world aircraft design efforts, while ensuring the overall goals of the customer-specific programs are achieved. The individual will be part of an interdisciplinary team with the main objective to identify and develop solutions for modeling aircraft aerodynamics and flight dynamics. This will include analyzing simulation data, creating comprehensive reports and presentations for internal and external customers, indicating areas of concern, and recommending changes. The geometrically detailed models will use high-performance computing and parallel processing techniques.
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, or Computational Fluid Dynamics from an accredited University. Master’s or PhD in Fluid Dynamics is preferred.
- Five (5) years of relevant experience.
- This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”.
- Demonstrated experience conducting CFD analysis, particularly in aircraft applications.
- Four (4) years proficiency with CFD software in an HPC environment; prefer Kestrel.
- Competency in CFD data processing (e.g. Pointwise, Paraview, Python, MATLAB).
- Proficiency with MS Office tools, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. All other computer systems and software are a plus.
- Excellent English communication skills with the ability to present technical findings clearly to cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to quickly understand issues and problems, and make logical decisions based on your analysis.
All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
