Job Summary:
Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.
NIAR is looking for a talented Design Engineer to join our growing, innovative team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a Design Engineer with NIAR to support various diverse customer programs. Responsibilities include designing and substantiating mechanical, systems, and interior components on various company projects and programs across the entire life cycle of design and development. Design activity includes primary structure, flight test and development structure, instrumentation, flight controls, ECS, secondary structures, interiors, control surfaces, special mission equipping, prototype development, etc.
Essential Functions:
- Creates detail modelings, airframe structural/system configuration layouts and detail designs including layouts, preliminary sizing, joints and part design with CATIA v5 utilizing metallic and composite materials.
- Executes changes to CATIA models, drawings, and other documents in support of the product, participating in trade studies, creating and maintaining interface control documents, and coordination with customers.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
- Three (3) years of experience in aerospace design.
- This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”.
- Experience developing and modifying 3D models and drawings.
- Experience with airframe, systems, or interior design.
- Experience in CATIA V5 and Solidworks.
- Familiarity with NASA and/or FAA structural design.
- Knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 along with tolerance analysis capabilities.
- Knowledge of airframe layout design.
- Metallic and composite design and fabrication.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
