Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.
NIAR is looking for a talented a Senior Design Engineer to join our growing, innovative team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a Senior Design Engineer with NIAR to support various diverse customer programs. Responsibilities include developing detail and modification design concepts/final design and designing and substantiating mechanical, systems, and interior components on various company projects and programs across the entire life cycle of design and development. The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for technical excellence and adherence to schedule of assignment area. Design activity includes primary structure, flight test and development structure, instrumentation, flight controls, ECS, secondary structures, interiors, control surfaces, special mission equipping, prototype development, etc.
Individuals must be willing to discuss issues with customers, including: Air Vehicle design, Systems Design & Requirements, Electromagnetic/Compatibility/Electromagnetic Interference, Parts, Materials, and Processes.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to complete detail modeling, airframe structural configuration layouts and detail designs including structural layouts, preliminary sizing, joint layouts and part design with CATIA v5, utilizing metallic and composite materials.
- Ability to make changes to CATIA models, drawings and other documents in support of the product.
- Ability to coordinate with customers.
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Engineering Technical discipline
- Ten (10) years of experience in aerospace design
- This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”.
- Experience in the following: Developing and modifying 3D models and drawings; Airframe Design/systems design/special missions; statistical tolerance analysis; CATIA V5.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Work under minimal direction and provide
- technical leadership.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Experience:
- More than ten (10) years of experience in aerospace design
- Experience leading teams or projects
All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
