Job Description:

Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.

NIAR is looking for a talented Senior Stress Engineer to join our growing, innovative team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a Senior Stress Engineer with NIAR to support various diverse customer programs. Tasks may include preliminary load path development; preliminary sizing; completion of analysis to support drawing approvals; and documentation of analysis and testing to support substantiation and certification efforts. Detail designs will utilize both metallic and composite materials.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs structural analysis and substantiates components on various projects across the entire life cycle of design and development. Components include primary structure, secondary structure, flight test and development structure, flight controls, mechanical systems, interiors, and modifications.
  • Participate in mentoring of junior analysts as they develop their engineering skillsets.
  • Work under minimal direction.
  • Domestic travel up to 10% may be required.

Qualifications/Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Ten (10) years of related experience
  • This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”.
  • Experience with handbook analysis methods and Finite Element Modeling ((Patran, Femap)
  • Experience with metallic and composite analysis methods.
  • Strong team player with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve desired results within a defined schedule
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Domestic travel up to 10 % may be required
  • Familiarity with civil and/or military structural design standards.

All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
