Full job description

The mission of Centinela Youth Services, Inc. (CYS) is to strengthen families and communities by empowering youth to resolve conflicts and overcome obstacles in order to become successful students and contributing adults. CYS is a 501c3 non-profit, restorative justice organization established in 1975. CYS operates a variety of innovative programs proven to increase student performance; reduce school dropout rates, gang involvement, youth violence and crime and ultimately help preserve families. CYS is leading innovation that is transforming youth justice in LA and the state, with a commitment to both youth development and serving victims of youth crime, while impacting systemic change to end the school to prison pipeline. CYS is also providing leadership to critical juvenile justice reform in LA County, and as a result is growing rapidly.

CYS is seeking an expert in people development with a track record in leading successful teams, to lead and support our caring team of case managers, policy change makers and operations/administrative staff to maximize agency impact and employee satisfaction.

Compensation

This is an exempt full-time position, including benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience. All full-time employees are invited to participate in the company’s health benefits package after completing the 60-90-day employment introductory period. Our benefits program includes select health plans and dental plans at 100% cost reimbursement (for employee only), vision insurance, time off accruals and holiday pay.

Work Location

This position will be temporarily split between remote work and work at our Inglewood office, with meetings in the field around the LA Area, until such a time that CYS is able to move into and operate fully from the Inglewood office.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. CYS has the following 9/80 work schedule: Monday – Thursday, 8am – 6pm. Friday, 8am – 5pm, with every other Friday off.

General Functions and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Executive Director, this senior leadership position is responsible for oversight of day-to-day operations of this agency with a staff of 30 that is rapidly growing to 40 this year, with 60+ volunteers. This critical role is the strategic leader focused on program execution and the operations that support programs. The Deputy Director is responsible for the people and processes that deliver quality and continuity of service while ensuring the CYS team is appropriately supported, equipped, and empowered. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve as the internal, day-to-day leader of the organization demonstrating the core values of CYS.
  • Manage the organization in the absence of the Executive Director.
  • Work with the Executive Director on strategic planning, coordination, and management of the organization’s programs and projects.
  • Provide clinical expertise and leadership to continue to develop the clinical skills of the CYS organization and to problem solve complex and challenging client needs.
  • Provide leadership and project management for program initiatives and grant implementation.
  • With a team of managers and supervisors, ensure achievement of grant goals, reporting requirements and renewal applications for an estimated 15-20 grants.
  • Equip and empower the team to effectively advance the CYS advocacy strategies to meet equity objectives.
  • Help give intellectual leadership to our agency-wide strategies based on research in the fields of Youth Diversion, Restorative Justice, trauma, and the juvenile justice system.
  • Responsible for the strategic enablement that allows Project Managers to ensure their teams have the resources they need to service throughout CYS service areas including community partnership resources for meeting space and supportive community services for youth.
  • Responsibilities for leading and supporting staff to include hiring, retention, clear work instructions, work quality monitoring, regular performance evaluations, developing performance improvement plans, coaching, mentoring, and training.
  • Manage department and grant budgets to ensure proper spending to meet program needs.
  • In collaboration with the Transformation Specialists, maintain collaborative relationships with assigned referral agency sources to monitor and control the continued flow of new program referrals and monitor effective delivery of service.
  • Utilize data systems and strategic data analysis to regularly review key program performance to ensure achievement of program outcomes and quality objectives.
  • Help represent CYS Restorative Justice programs in County and community meetings, and professional associations.
  • Serve on the CYS management team to give leadership to promote successful communication, team cohesion, wellbeing, and support among all members of the CYS team.
  • Work with other departments as needed to define, implement, and revise policies and guidelines for the organization.
  • Work with all members of the CYS leadership, including the Executive Director, Board, to ensure coordination for strategic planning and sustainable solutions to manage program growth and ensure funding and sustainability of the program.
  • Support internal and external audits as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent management skills, utilizing best practices in achieving staff engagement and quality outputs.
  • Skilled at building and retaining high performing teams.
  • Track record of managing large County/State contracts successfully with “no findings.”
  • Experience directing clinical teams with demonstrated quality outcomes.
  • Ability to form partnerships to expand agency impact/resources.
  • Experience negotiating/reviewing contracts.
  • Excellent problem solving and crisis management skills.
  • Project management experience and use of data/software tools to manage and monitor workflow.
  • Strong friendly advocacy and diplomacy skills and ability to understand different perspectives and find common ground.
  • Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong experience in staff supervision, including workload distribution and team building.
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to handle multiple demands and work well under stress while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent skills in various software applications (beyond simply Microsoft Office Suite), including Outlook add-ons, Excel formulas and pivot tables, Google products, CRM. Experience in using and/or implementing software applications for teamwork (i.e. Trello, Teams, Sharepoint).
  • Passion for adolescent development, Restorative Justice, juvenile justice diversion and criminal justice reform.
  • Ability to travel between and work from various LA County area locations.
  • Must have reliable transportation; valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance when/if applicable.
  • Must be able to pass background clearances.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in nonprofit management, psychology, social work, or similar with clinical experience is preferred.
  • At least five years of professional nonprofit senior leadership experience.
  • A combination of relevant education and equivalent work experience is also acceptable.

Working Conditions

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license, have use of a motor vehicle and be able to provide evidence of automobile liability insurance.
