About Us

Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) is a human services agency helping families and individuals in all stages of homelessness and housing insecurity. Services include emergency shelter, housing search case management, daytime drop-in, street outreach, supportive housing, homeless/eviction prevention and connections to supplemental services. SHC also operates Project SOUP, which is a food service program that includes a pantry marketplace, community meals and delivery of groceries to the homebound. Position Summary

The Development and Communications Manager will work closely with the DoD to lead fundraising and communication operations, including event logistics and execution, development administration, reporting, database management, grant research, communication scheduling, and content creation.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

Events & Community Initiatives

  • With support from the development team, you will be responsible for executing a spring and fall event, including project management of vendors and other stakeholders, event logistics, marketing, advertising, and volunteer management.
  • Oversee all aspects of small community-led events, including planning, execution, marketing, advertising, and donor management, ensuring the realization of the envisioned goals.
  • You will benefit from well-established event processes but will bring a creative vision of new ideas and improvements, focusing on enhancing the donor experience.

Communication and Content Creation

  • Build relationships with clients and staff to identify success stories and metrics and contribute to the content, design and implementation of the Annual Fund.
  • Create content and seek SHC impact stories for donor newsletter (Constant Contact).
  • Develop and maintain the communications calendar, mixing a variety of communication methods with balanced content (information, solicitation, recognition, events).
  • Manage website content (Avada website builder).
  • Manage and develop strategies for social media presence across various platforms (Meta Suite/LinkedIn), including content design, campaign, and process.
  • Develop other marketing materials such as flyers and brochures with a simple one-click approach to giving and a strong call to action (Canva preferred).

Administration

  • Responsible for donor database (Bloomerang) and fundraising platforms (i.e. Give Smart, One Cause, Kindful), including data entry/cleansing, donor profile management, creating event and peer-to-peer fundraising pages.
  • Develop and generate reports and provide report analysis from the donor management database to support grant and budgetary requirements.
  • Support the DoD in organizing and conducting direct postal and email solicitations.

Other Duties

  • Research operating and programmatic grants
  • Assist with grant applications/event sponsorships
  • Coordinate collection and distribution of in-kind donations, including food drives, holiday gift drives, etc
  • Abide by handbook rules, policies and code of conduct
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education, Abilities, Competencies and Experience Required

  • College degree or 4–6 years of relevant nonprofit experience in development and communications
  • Proven experience coordinating and executing events, including vendor management, marketing, and logistics
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to write compelling donor communications, marketing content, and social media posts
  • Experience managing donor databases (preferably Bloomerang) and fundraising platforms (e.g., Give Smart, One Cause, Kindful)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Gmail, Canva, Constant Contact
  • Skilled in managing social media platforms (Meta Suite, LinkedIn) and developing digital campaigns
  • Ability to build positive relationships with donors, staff, volunteers, and community partners
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities; however, you will coordinate the work of a staff member responsible for SHC’s administrative duties.

Work Environment

This job operates in an office and professional environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers. On occasion, the job will require going out to events or organizations, based on the needs of the business.

Physical Demands

This is mostly sedentary outside of travel in an office space. This would require the ability to sit at a desk, frequent walking, bend or stand as necessary. However, during events, the role will require lifting and loading event collateral to various locations.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Designated days and schedule will be primarily Monday-Friday though will also be based on the needs of the operation and business, will require some weekends, nights and early mornings.

Travel

Position requires minimal travel; based on the needs of the operations and business.
