Full job description

St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church is a socially diverse and theologically progressive community of faith. As a congregation, we share the values of Welcoming, Action, and Spiritual Grounding. Parishioners can be found advocating in the New Mexico State capitol, delivering supplies to immigration shelters, or supporting our on-site food pantry which serves over 100 households per week. In recent years, alongside local partners, we have hosted “the Landing,” an onsite shelter for our immigrant neighbors, receiving as many as 20 guests at a time, and helping them to transition to more permanent housing with sponsors across the U.S.

Our ministry with youth and children is growing. Every Sunday our Children’s Chapel during the 9am service involves over a dozen families with small kids. We are currently discerning a return to a Godly Play model of children’s ministry. Our youth, while not currently organized, number more than 20 kids in their teens. Additionally, we have an onsite preschool with an enrollment near 40 and active parent community.

We seek a lay professional to join with our clergy team (a new-to-position and experienced rector and associate rector). Working together, we hope to grow avenues to support the young people in our midst and to help them engage in our work of Welcome, Action and Spiritual Grounding. We also seek stronger support for our outreach and advocacy work across the congregation and engaging the community outside our walls.

Support Formation for all ages

  • Re-imagining our youth program
  • Supporting our Associate Rector in building out programming for young families
  • Work with our Rector to develop an organized ministry for young adults.
  • Collaborating on inter-generational formation opportunities.

Support Outreach and Advocacy Ministries

  • Work with our network of volunteers to build up our ministry footprint with recently arrived immigrants.
  • Support advocacy at a local and statewide level for immigrant and LGBTQ+ rights, environmental justice and other priorities determined by the church.
  • Engage in a process of evaluating current outreach ministries to determine how well we are serving the people we intend to serve. Support a process to imagine new ways of engaging.

This is up-to a full-time position with benefits. Depending on the candidate and their strengths, there is flexibility in the above listed portfolio. We hope to build a ministry team which can identify areas of strength and areas of growth together. Our clergy and lay staff will work collaboratively to cover all aspects of ministry in our growing and dynamic parish.

We hope you will consider joining us in ministry. St. Michael’s has a long history of engagement as a destination progressive congregation in a vibrant city. We also have a history of offering support to staff with young families, including significant discounts for preschool. Albuquerque offers affordability, a rich cultural heritage, and ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. New Mexico is a state with strong protections for LGBTQIA+ rights and reproductive healthcare.

This position allows ample opportunity to champion a variety of projects and initiatives while receiving high support and collaboration from existing staff and leadership. St. Michael’s is committed to and fully supports the principle of equal employment opportunity. All employees are responsible for supporting the concept of equal employment opportunity.

St. Michael’s will not discriminate in lay employment on the basis of an individual’s race, color, sex, national origin, age, familial status, disability, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
