Full job description

The Editorial Intern will support primarily the Peer Magazine editorial team in the Publications department but can also assist War Cry as well. Responsibilities include researching, writing, and editing stories for Peer.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

Works primarily for the Assistant Editor of Peer in helping to gather, write, edit, and produce content for Peer Magazine, the national youth publication of The Salvation Army.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supporting editorial production during two rounds of edits for Peer
  • Pitching feature article and story ideas and communicating with freelance writers
  • Writing articles, interviewing sources, and reporting on news stories in the Panorama department
  • Pitching interviews to agents
  • Researching topics and trends related to faith, community, and culture that is relevant for Generation Z
  • Contributing articles for Peer Magazine online if needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong writing and editing skills with an understanding of (or eagerness to learn!) AP Style and SEO
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, or degree in process
  • Work in the office, in-person
  • Ability to provide references

WORK HOURS & DURATION

  • 9am – 4pm on any three weekdays up to 21 hours per week
  • The duration is between May 13 and July 29
  • This is an in-person position at the NHQ location in Alexandria, VA

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.
