Job Opening for Executive Director
Herndon-Reston FISH
Herndon-Reston FISH, Inc., (FISH) is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director for our organization. FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help) is a volunteer, non-sectarian, non-profit 501 (c) (3) dedicated to helping individuals and families in the Herndon-Reston area of Virginia meet financial emergencies and short-term needs. Every year, FISH helps thousands of predominantly very low-income families and individuals in all demographic categories by providing assistance in paying for rent, utilities, medical items and prescriptions, household items, and other short-term emergency needs.
FISH manages and operates The Bargain Loft – a thrift store providing affordable shopping to the community. Net store proceeds are used to support FISH assistance programs.
FISH operates under the direction of a volunteer board of directors. Proceeds to support our activities come from grants from Fairfax County and donations from individuals, churches, foundations, and businesses.
We receive client referrals from Fairfax County social workers and community organizations. Our activities are supported by a small paid staff and a large number of volunteers.
The position is scheduled to begin in mid March, 2025.
Job Description and ResponsibilitiesJOB SUMMARY
The following responsibilities will be carried out in coordination with and under the guidance of the Board of Directors.
The Executive Director will:
· Be responsible for the overall daily operation of FISH.
· Supervise and ensure implementation of the Emergency Assistance Program.
· Generate revenue.
· Develop sponsors and community relationships.
· Promote awareness of FISH throughout the community.
· Supervise and provide support to the Manager of the Bargain Loft as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES LEADERSHIP and COMMUNICATION
· Communicates in a respectful and effective manner with the FISH Board, Emergency Assistance and Bargain Loft managers, volunteers, the public, and representatives of other organizations.
· Chairs the Funds Development and Emergency Assistance Committees when a chairperson is not active.
· Provides support to other FISH committees and programs as needed.
· Supervises the Emergency Assistance Manager to ensure guidelines are followed and data is entered into FISH records.
· Supervises the Bargain Loft Manager in the maintenance and operation of the Bargain Loft.
· Assists in the recruitment of volunteers.
· Oversees publicity and marketing of FISH programs and fund-raising events.
· Speaks on behalf of FISH to raise awareness of its programs, increase donations, and enlist new volunteers.
FISH PROGRAMS
The Executive Director will provide leadership and guidance to the volunteers and employees responsible for FISH Programs by:
· Providing information and orientation to Board members or other volunteers who coordinate and implement FISH programs and events (FISH Fling, Holiday Food and Gift Program, and any others).
· Monitoring and ensuring implementation of FISH programs and events.
FISH FUND RAISING
The Executive Director will initiate and participate in fundraising activities, professional networking, and community outreach by:
· Seeking, completing, and submitting grant applications.
· Developing new funding streams to increase FISH income.
· Soliciting funds and sponsorships from local businesses and individual donors.
· Providing leadership and guidance for volunteers responsible for the FISH Fling.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
Administrative duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Functioning as the office manager and business manager.
· Ensuring the preparation of the FISH Annual Report for approval by the Board.
· Ensuring the preparation of the FISH Fact Sheet and Trifold.
· Ensuring current donor and volunteer contact information and Constant Contact are
· maintained and thank-you letters sent.
· Reviewing and approving FISH external communications for accuracy.
· Cooperating with volunteers supporting social media.
· Liaisoning with outside vendors.

Salary and Benefits
· Salary commensurate with knowledge and experience, in the range of mid $50,000s to low $60,000s.
· Three weeks of vacation/annual leave.
· Two weeks of individual/family sick leave.
