Position Summary: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the oversight of the Humane Society of El Paso, which includes administration of all programs and services of the organization. The Executive Director is responsible for the strategic processes, and managing and developing paid and volunteer staff.

The Executive Director will assist the Board in the general understanding and explanation of governance protocols. This individual will work with the Board, leadership team, management, and other key stakeholders in the execution of the organization’s strategic plan, the development of objectives and policy to align with the agency’s mission. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Humane Society of El Paso in compliance with Board-adopted policies and with all applicable local, state and federal regulations and laws. Through effective communication and leadership, the Executive Director is responsible for initiating and maintaining community relationships. This individual will be responsible for working with others on the leadership team to secure operation funds, long-term fund development plans, and build new relationships to sustain current and future operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Provide vision and direction for the future growth of programs, policies and procedures for the Humane Society of El Paso;
  • Ensure that all shelter activities support the shelter’s mission, philosophy, and strategy;
  • Provide guidance, stability, support, and collaboration to all staff and volunteers;
  • Implement Board-driven long-range and strategic plans to ensure that the goals and objectives of the shelter are successfully achieved;
  • Champion innovation and ensure success through strong and dynamic leadership.
  • Collaborate with other animal welfare agencies in the community and nationwide.
  • Perform annual reviews for leadership team.

Financial Accountability

  • Oversee the shelter’s budget and business plans and ensure sound fiscal management and capital allocation;
  • Maintain and implement fiscal policies and procedures in accordance with approved policies;
  • Prepare an annual budget, in conjunction with leadership team, and provide monthly financial updates to Board of Directors and leadership team.

Fundraising & Grant Writing

  • Responsible for securing new donors, foundations and corporations; while also maintaining past relationships with previous donors, foundations, and corporations.
  • Build and foster relationships with foundations, corporations, major gift donors, etc;
  • Strengthen major and planned giving programs to add financial security to the agency;
  • Create and coordinate short-term and long-term fund development plans;
  • Responsible for managing and completing grant applications; including current applications and staying up-to-date on potential grants;
  • Develop new, creative fundraising opportunities with staff in order to secure the shelter’s financial position;
  • Manage legacy campaign and respective relationships.

Public Relations and Community Outreach

  • Serve as the chief spokesperson and face for the shelter and effectively represent its goals and mission to individuals, private foundations, government leaders, the media, sponsors, and donors in order to attract the widest interest and support;
  • Ensure the shelter is represented at coalitions, membership organizations, and other humane field associations;
  • Help the shelter’s legislative agenda and collaborate as necessary in order to promote animal welfare initiatives;
  • Oversee marketing program and ensure agency marketing efforts align with mission, values, and strategic objectives;
  • Be an animal welfare leader in the El Paso community.

Administration and Management

  • Guarantee that the shelter staff is well informed about shelter policies and procedures and decisions that affect them and the agency;
  • Develop and implement procedures to ensure good management, administrative, and fiscal practices;
  • Ensure that the staff understands the vision and direction of the shelter ensuring staff is able to develop in their roles and responsibilities;
  • Lead by example and maintain the highest professional standard and practices for the shelter;
  • Review shelter department needs on a regular basis to ensure adequate staffing.
  • Prepare reports and other records as required by the Board of Directors;
  • Work with the leadership team to oversee agency vendors, contractors and consultants to ensure performance under their agreement is met and satisfactory relationships exist.

Program and Services Development

  • Establish objectives and work plans;
  • Research and evaluate potential programs for the shelter based on strategic plans and goals;
  • Develop and implement new program activities and capitalize on new opportunities for new service areas.

Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Record of strong and inclusive leadership with open communication with staff, the Board, and other constituents with whom the director will interface;
  • Personnel management skills that include an ability to work collaboratively, listen, provide feedback, build morale, delegate and make decisions are essential;
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills including with staff, donors, prospective sponsors, interviews, public speaking, etc.;
  • Must be articulate and passionate about the humane treatment of animals and will welcome and respect the multiple perspectives and groups that demonstrate an active interest in animal welfare;
  • Demonstrated understanding of business principles applied to a nonprofit enterprise, including a background of good budget management;
  • Proficiency in computer applications, i.e., Microsoft office, Excel, databases; understanding of web based applications and their utilization;
  • Understanding compliance issues involving pertinent local, state, and federal regulations;
  • ISO experience desired;
  • Bilingual English-Spanish desired.

Job Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree from a four-year college or university is required; a graduate degree is preferred;
  • A background in business management, finance, marketing, non-profit, fundraising or administration is preferred;
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and budgetary oversight, fiscal policy, and bookkeeping;
  • Experience creating fund development plans which include fundraising, securing major and planned gifts from donors, corporate relations, foundation, and stakeholders;
  • Successful grant writing experience desired;
  • Past experience in a senior leadership role where he/she has either reported directly to or worked closely with a Board of Directors;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills that can demonstrate a successful background in external relations, including experience speaking with the media in a variety of situations.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an animal shelter setting with the potential for exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic disease, animal bites and scratches. Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to cleaning agents. Frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping are required for up to 8 hours per day. Regular lifting of 25 – 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation is required.
