Akoma Unity Center is seeking dynamic, enthusiastic, tech savvy Youth Academic Mentors of color comfortable conducting class sessions for young scholars. The Mentor will support AUC’s Expanded Learning and Community programs. Mentors will facilitate age appropriate S.T.E.A.M enrichment activities, provide academic support, and be responsible for individual student case management. The ideal candidate will be inspired by our mission steeped in equity, and who are motivated to unleash youth’s potential. We want people who are strong collaborators, skilled communicators, and problem solvers comfortable in a community of continuous learning.

This is a perfect position for:

  • College students or recent college graduates looking to make a difference in the field of education.
  • Teachers looking to transition out of the classroom and make a large-scale impact on education.
  • People with experience in EdTech or Education Management organizations

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 20 years old with a high school diploma.
  • (Preferred) Three years of college coursework; working towards a degree in Education, Child Development, Social Work or a related field.
  • (Preferred) Prior teaching experience or equivalent in education, tutoring, mentoring, or homeschooling.
  • (Preferred) Knowledge of curriculum development.
  • We ask our Academic Coaches make a 6 month or 1-year commitment to ensure continuity for our students;
  • Ability to work in a culturally relevant environment.
  • Sensitivity to under-served youth of all ages.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to motivate and inspire scholars in particular, young African American and Latino students.
  • Ability to utilize Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Suites, Microsoft office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint);
  • Maintain a safe, consistent, and nurturing environment where all students of color can thrive.
  • Monitor, guide, and redirect scholar’s behavior as needed.
  • Utilize sensible, professional judgement and wisdom.
  • Model the values of Akoma and preform in ways that support those values.

  • Excellent organization and time management skills,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate class following AUC’s age-appropriate STEAM and project-based learning curriculum in a 4-hour session.
  • Communicate with Parents/Guardians regarding their scholar’s needs to ensure they are provided with the resources needed to succeed in school and at home.
  • Liaise with Teachers/Counselors/Admin to assist in student’s academic performance and social-emotional development.
  • Record all communications with Parents/Guardians, Teachers/Admin, and one-on-one conversations with students.
  • Effectively assist scholar academic performance, evaluations, and reporting of student’s achievements.
  • Lead students through successful program completion and attainment of learning outcomes while maintaining and up-keeping proper student records.
  • Carry out effective behavior management techniques in accordance with AUC’s behavior management policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development of lesson plans which includes a variety of learning and interactive activities for age-appropriate students.
  • Contribute toward program enhancements to support After School Program and long-term goals.
  • Report any concerned students to Site Lead and maintain confidentiality of all participant information.
  • Recruit students on/off targeted school sites.
  • Support special community events that may occur on weekend or holiday time periods.
  • Attend and participate in meetings and ongoing trainings.
  • Follow all AUC’s COVID-19 Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure day to day cleaning and cleanliness of classroom.
  • Assist Site Lead and other leadership staff with all other tasks as needed.

Preferable licenses or certifications:

  • Driver’s License.

Physical Demand and Work Environment

  • Required to stand and walk at least 5 hours a day; Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Exposed to weather conditions up to 99 degrees.
  • Hours per week: up to 30

Job Types: Contract, Part-time

Pay: $20.00 per hour
